I have a long history with Toast products, those lovely folks over in Seattle that craft rustic, high-quality, wood skins for your favorite gadgets. They have been incredibly supportive over the years, and have yet to disappoint. That said, it breaks my heart to write this next line; I kind of don’t like the PlayStation 5 wood skin. Let me explain.
When the PS5 was first unveiled, people were a bit mixed about the design. Personally, I wasn’t the biggest fan at first, but it grew on me, more so once I actually played the system. The design is completely intentional and made to help with cooling. After the notoriously loud PS4s that started up near the end of the generation, it makes sense they would focus on airflow. Regardless of what you think of the system, it’s pretty much agreed that players instantly wanted to customize the white plates of the console.
Toast has made utterly fantastic products for as long as I’ve worked with them. The base PS4, PS4 Pro, and Switch covers all looked and felt fantastic. They were also surprisingly easy to apply. That’s where the PS5 cover differs. I followed the instructions. I even watched a tutorial video, but man oh man, it was still a huge hassle to apply. This is not a reflection of the guys over at Toast, but rather the odd shape and design of the PS5 itself. It requires measuring, and damned precise placement for everything to line up nicely. After about 45 minutes, I still wasn’t happy with the final look. I had a few misaligned edges and I even had a spot rip due to me constantly having to readjust it. It just wasn’t an enjoyable experience.
Compared to all the other Toast covers I’ve applied in the past, this one I can honestly say was disappointing. While the final product does look really nice, it just isn’t as flawless as the others. Little imperfections like that deeply bother me. Again, this is not the fault of the Toast crew. I truly believe they did the absolute best job to make a custom skin for this very differently shaped console.
In the end, I removed the skin a few weeks after applying. I just wasn’t happy with it. So if you’re looking for a cover for your PS5, think hard on it before buying one from anyone. The console just isn’t designed to be skinned in my opinion. That said, if you’re looking for the best quality PS5 skin you can get, then Toast is the way to go. They are top-tier in quality and aesthetics.
Thanks as always to Toast for sending over this skin!
Toast also offer a whole range of great covers for the iPhone 13. Go give them a look!
