Microsoft has announced that starting in November 2026, Xbox Game Pass subscribers will face monthly limits on cloud gaming hours. The new system introduces a capped amount of cloud playtime depending on the specific subscription tier.
According to an announcement from Xbox Wire, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers will receive 15 hours of cloud gaming per month, Game Pass Premium subscribers will get 10 hours, and Game Pass Essential users will have 5 hours. Currently, Game Pass subscribers can stream games via Xbox Cloud Gaming without any time restrictions.
Details of the Cloud Gaming Hour Limits and Purchase Options
The introduction of these limits is expected to affect approximately 4% of current Game Pass subscribers who frequently use cloud gaming. Xbox has stated that once a subscriber exhausts their monthly cloud gaming hours, additional streaming time can be purchased through the Xbox Store. The exact pricing, available purchase options, and the number of hours offered will vary by region, with further information due prior to the November implementation.
Separately, Xbox will offer a new method to access cloud gaming services without needing a Game Pass subscription. From November 2026, players will be able to buy cloud gaming hours directly from the Xbox Store to stream eligible games they own on supported devices. This option caters to gamers who prefer occasional access to cloud gaming or do not subscribe to any Game Pass tier.
Impact on Console Players and Market Availability
The cloud gaming service also enables Xbox One owners to stream select games optimised for Xbox Series X|S without upgrading their hardware. Microsoft highlights that this could be particularly beneficial in regions where next-generation consoles are less accessible or affordable. Xbox plans to continue expanding cloud support to a broader range of titles throughout 2026.
The shift to a monthly hour cap is attributed to the rising costs involved in maintaining and improving the cloud gaming infrastructure as usage grows. Microsoft indicated that moving to a limited-hour model allows ongoing investment in the service’s reliability and performance while managing operational expenses.
Xbox has pledged to provide more comprehensive details on pricing, cloud gaming features, eligible games, and how users can monitor their remaining cloud hours closer to the rollout date. The company also stated it will monitor player feedback following the change and make adjustments if necessary.
