With the 360 having cornered the mainstream console market and continuing to push its lead over the PS3, it looks as if Microsoft have Nintendo’s Wii in their crosshairs, placing further focus on casual, kinetically responsive projects.

Labelled Project Natal, MS’ Don Mattrick has presented an apparent vision of the future utilising the gamer’s body as the controller. Footage has been shown of integration in racing games, skating games, and even in the navigation of the dashboard.

Ricochet – full body breakout, full body this, full body that.

It appears that Project Natal could be central in Microsoft’s progressive milking of every udder of every cash cow in the gaming world, even allowing the green team to pander to fitness freaks through active, physical games.

While this is more of a vision for the future than something to expect next week, it’s definitely something to be excited about, as it’s sure to shape the landscape of the gaming world in the coming years.

Sam Finch

Sam has been unable to peel his bloodshot eyes and RSI-ridden wrists from the world of gaming since he was first introduced to it, like all good junkies, by his Grandad. From those early days of MegaDrive sweetness, bashing through the throngs of enemies on Shining Force II, his love of all things games has extended upwards and outwards onto a variety of platforms. You can either believe that spiel, or get the real scoop and know that his spaceship actually crashed here some years ago and he is currently incognito as a games writer for Console Monster.
