Hope in the City Launches on Xbox Series X|S and PC with Unique Sketchbook Investigation System

Hope in the City is set to release on 11 November 2026 for Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam, with availability on Xbox Game Pass from day one. The narrative mystery adventure developed by Lofty Sky Games and published by NAGA Games centers on Hope Song, a 17-year-old artist in Shenyang, China, investigating her parents’ disappearance through a unique sketchbook mechanic.

Players assume the role of Hope, who, lacking formal detective authority, relies on her observational skills and artist’s eye to navigate a city that holds few answers. The game eschews traditional detective tools such as badges or official warrants, instead focusing on how Hope uses her notebook to piece together clues and observations.

Innovative Sketchbook Gameplay Drives Investigation

Hope in the City introduces an investigation system where players collect clues and character insights, then combine two observations within Hope’s sketchbook to form new connections. These breakthroughs unlock further dialogue options, locations, and leads. The notebook mechanic is designed to represent Hope’s unrestricted thought process, allowing players the freedom to explore ideas that the character might not voice aloud due to social or narrative constraints.

The development team emphasised the importance of player experimentation, ensuring that every combination of notes elicits a unique response, even if it does not advance the investigation. This design choice is aimed at keeping players engaged and encouraged to explore all possibilities. Extensive playtesting led to refinements in the notebook interface and clue presentation to balance challenge with accessibility.

Art Direction Reflects Hope’s Perspective

The sketchbook features over 100 hand-drawn illustrations created by artist Calista Antonio, who blends 3D modeling with traditional art techniques to capture Hope’s impressions and emotions. Rather than polished artwork, the sketches are intentionally styled as quick visual notes, reinforcing the narrative perspective of a young artist processing her environment.

Antonio’s personal experience as an artist of Chinese heritage who moved to Canada informs the emotional and cultural tone of Hope’s journey. Some of Antonio’s paintings appear within the game’s environments, including Hope’s bedroom, adding a personal layer to the character’s world.

Hope in the City offers a distinct narrative detective experience on Xbox Series X|S and PC, featuring a creative approach to investigation suited for players seeking a story-driven mystery with a fresh gameplay mechanic. The game’s day-one launch on Xbox Game Pass ensures wide accessibility for subscribers across Microsoft’s platforms.
