David Hayter Speaks His Mind

When David Hayter was the centerpiece guest speaker for the Anime Expo event, he had a few things to say about his former director for all four MGS games. He thought that some of Hideo Kojima’s scriptwriting and direction for the game was over-the-top. In a specific instance where game trailers would show snake about to commit suicide, Hayter had this to say:

“I didn’t agree with that at all, and I begged them to change it, but I think it’s still in the final game,” he said. “I didn’t buy it at all. I think it’s weak for Snake to be killing other people and then not be able to kill himself when it’s time. If he knows it’s time, then it’s time.”

Hayter also revealed that as far back as MGS1, actors had a tough time getting through the alternate ending in MGS1 where Snake and Otocon are seen riding off into the sunset in a snowmobile.

“It felt like it was written to be romantic,” Hayter said. “It was just humiliating.”

Even though he had those particular criticisms, Hayter also says he has learned from Kojima how to be a better Hollywood scriptwriter:

“Kojima and I have different styles, but I’ve certainly learned things from him, especially about ambiguity and telling a story without giving all the answers.”

Right now Hayter is trying to make a case to Sony to be the scriptwriter for the upcoming MGS film.

What do you all think of Hayter’s comments? Is he just being a hater or does he have a point? What would you think about him being the scriptwriter for the new film? Let us know.
