Top journalist criticises retailer that refused to sell her son a video game

A top retail adviser and journalist has attacked a video games retailer after they refused to sell her son a video game.

Mary Portas, star of Channel 4’s Secret Shopper, has posted her outrage on social-networking and micro-blogging website, Twitter, after a sales assistant at GAME “refused to sell [her] 17 year old son a 15+ game,” despite providing proof with his photo and name on his 16+ Oyster card.

Like many retailers, GAME run a Challenge 25 scheme in which they ask for identification off any customer who looks under the age of 25. While Mary Portas’ son did show identification, the Oyster Card is not a valid form of photo ID.

Also speaking out on Twitter, the CEO of Game, Ian Shepherd, said: “Well quite an afternoon! I’m delighted to see all your support for age verification. I’m very proud of our brilliant team in GAME Ox. St and also committed to every customer being delighted.

He continued: “We will sort with Mary Portas – I’m sure we will clear up any misunderstanding.
