Balor Games has announced the release window for Threads of Time, an indie JRPG drawing inspiration from Chrono Trigger. The turn-based role-playing title is scheduled to launch during the summer of 2027 on Xbox Series X|S, PC via Steam, and Nintendo Switch, including Nintendo’s upcoming Switch 2 platform.
Threads of Time centres around a group of time travellers battling sinister forces intent on rewriting history and jeopardising the past, present, and future. The game offers exploration across multiple time periods, blending turn-based combat with a narrative-driven approach.
The game adopts an HD-2D pixel art style, reminiscent of classic JRPG aesthetics, combined with a new cast of characters and various exotic settings. It has been in development for some time, with its last major public update dating back to the Tokyo Game Show in 2025.
Platform Availability and Features
Threads of Time will be available on Xbox Series X|S and PC at launch, with players able to access it through Steam for Windows users. Notably, the Nintendo Switch will also receive the game, extending its reach to handheld and hybrid play.
While Threads of Time is confirmed for Xbox consoles and PC, there has been no official confirmation regarding Xbox Play Anywhere support. Such functionality would allow cross-save compatibility and enable playing on both PC and Xbox with shared progress, a feature the community has expressed interest in.
The confirmation of a Nintendo Switch 2 release aligns with Nintendo’s recent hardware announcements, ensuring compatibility with next-gen handheld devices. The simultaneous multi-platform launch broadens Threads of Time’s accessibility across current-generation console ecosystems.
Gameplay and Narrative Elements
In terms of gameplay, Threads of Time promises in-depth turn-based combat and a narrative-rich experience, where players navigate various historical periods to prevent catastrophic alterations to the timeline. The story aims to deliver the tactical elements and character-driven storytelling fans expect from JRPGs of this style.
The HD-2D art design represents a key visual feature, blending nostalgic pixel art with modern graphical enhancements. This aesthetic choice is intended to evoke a retro feel while supporting more dynamic visual presentations across supported consoles.
With its announcement of a 2027 summer release window, Threads of Time positions itself as a notable addition to the JRPG lineup on Xbox, PC, and Nintendo platforms, appealing to players interested in story-driven, time-travel-themed RPGs with classic turn-based mechanics.
