The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Songs of the Past Expansion Revealed for Gamescom 2026

CD Projekt has confirmed that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Songs of the Past expansion will be revealed at Gamescom 2026 during the Opening Night Live event. This news directly affects players on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, as the expansion is scheduled to launch in 2027 on these platforms.

Songs of the Past is the third expansion for The Witcher 3, arriving more than a decade after the original game’s release and following the 2016 Blood and Wine expansion. CD Projekt is co-developing this expansion with Fool’s Theory, a team made up of industry veterans who previously worked on The Witcher 3.

Expansion details and platform availability

The expansion stars Geralt of Rivia and is set to deliver a new story within the familiar world of The Witcher 3. It is designed to stand on its own while also functioning as a prologue to the forthcoming The Witcher 4, according to CD Projekt’s joint CEO Michał Nowakowski. The game will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, targeting current-generation hardware.

Nowakowski explained to investors that the delayed launch to 2027, instead of 2026 as previously expected, was a decision made collectively with the development team to ensure the highest quality consumer experience. This marks a deliberate extension of the development timeline to meet quality goals rather than rushing to an earlier release.

Hints from CD Projekt ahead of reveal

In recent livestreams commemorating The Witcher 3’s 10th anniversary and Blood and Wine’s milestone, CD Projekt provided limited teasers about the new expansion. These included references to Geralt’s new third sword, which appears in revealed artwork and imagery tied to Belleteyn, an important event in Witcher lore. The expansion will also include new Gwent cards and intends to maintain the size and scope familiar to players from Blood and Wine.

The developer has also reiterated work on cross-platform mod support for The Witcher 3, though no specific date for its release has been confirmed. This update will coincide with ongoing support post-launch of Songs of the Past.

While no gameplay footage or detailed trailers have been shown yet, CD Projekt plans to present the first look at Songs of the Past during Opening Night Live on 25 August. The showcase is scheduled for 7pm UK time (8pm CEST).

The Witcher 3 remains one of the best-selling RPGs, recently hitting 65 million copies sold worldwide. CD Projekt’s focus continues to be split between supporting this title and progressing its next major projects, including The Witcher 4 and Cyberpunk 2.
