Rumour: Studio Bizarre Creations to close

Rumours were bouncing around yesterday evening that the publisher gamers love to hate, Activision, is to close the doors of developer Bizarre Creations due to poor sales performance on Blur and 007 Blood Stone, causing the redundancy of their 200 or so staff.

Bizarre Creations were bought by Activision in 2007 and are the talent behind the fabulous PGR series and one of the greatest games on XBLA: Geometry Wars. According to Shacknews, Activision released the following statement to them on the matter:

Over the past three years since our purchase of Bizarre Creations, the fundamentals of the racing genre have changed significantly. Although we made a substantial investment in creating a new IP, Blur, it did not find a commercial audience. Bizarre is a very talented team of developers, however, because of the broader economic factors impacting the market, we are exploring our options regarding the future of the studio, including a potential sale of the business.

Marty Greenwell

Marty has been gaming since the heady years of the ZX-81 and still owns most of the gaming systems purchased since those days, including the Atari 2600, ZX Spectrum, SNES, Jaguar, Dreamcast and GameCube. Being a collection junkie (or more accurately, hoarder), he buys more games than he can possibly play, far too many of which are still sealed in their packaging. Marty favours RPGs and Driving games when it comes to genres, and is possibly a little bit too addicted to Disgaea. When not gaming he’s out frightening OAPs on his motorcycle, clad in black leather.
