Rockstar Games unveiled an extended gameplay trailer for Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) in an exclusive debut on Netflix. The trailer, broadcasted on 27 August at 8pm BST, offered a detailed look at the game’s mechanics, characters, and world, marking the first official in-depth gameplay presentation since previous cinematic teasers.
The Netflix timed exclusive meant subscribers had early access to the footage, with a six-hour delay before the trailer was made publicly available on Rockstar’s YouTube channel at 2am BST the following day (below). This approach underscored Rockstar’s strategy to expand promotional efforts beyond traditional gaming channels.
New gameplay details and dual protagonist focus
The extended look centred on gameplay for the recently announced setting of ‘Leonidas’—Rockstar’s take on Florida—and introduced players to the game’s dual protagonists, Lucia and Jason. The trailer demonstrated the reportedly seamless switching mechanic between these characters, allowing players to explore the interconnected narrative from multiple perspectives.
Earlier teasers focused on cinematic montages showcasing action and environments, but this trailer was the first substantial official gameplay reveal. It highlighted various systems including realistic character needs, such as exercising and eating, echoing role-playing elements reminiscent of previous San Andreas entries.
Realism and development insight
Rockstar’s extended trailer emphasised the level of detail in the game world, underlining the developer’s efforts to build an immersive and dynamic experience. The publisher reportedly assembled a specialised team in Miami to research local culture and criminal milieus, meeting with ex-criminals, law enforcement personnel, club promoters, and others to enhance authenticity.
The trailer also hinted at complex simulation aspects, featuring visible effects of lifestyle choices on character appearance and gameplay, such as exercise impacts and multi-day binge drinking sequences.
This exclusive look has been the most comprehensive official gameplay reveal to date, confirming several previously leaked details while providing Rockstar’s curated presentation of GTA 6’s systems and setting.
The extended gameplay trailer is now available on Rockstar’s YouTube channel following its timed exclusive window on Netflix, accessible to players on all announced platforms.
