PS4 to get Nostalgic with PS1/2 Compatibility?

Seasoned tipster with a history of delivering the goods with his industry leaks, Ahsan Rasheed, has claimed the following on his Twitter feed:

“Be excited: 1. Local PS2 / PS1 support on PS4 w/ native 1080p rendering for select titles. 2. Bluray+Media Player updates— Ahsan Rasheed (@thuway)March 25, 2014“

Particularly exciting is Rasheed’s first tip, which if it comes off should prove quite the hammer strike against the Xbox ONE from Sony. Backwards compatibility (or the lack thereof) is a particularly contentious and often infuriating issue with the launch of new consoles, the announcement of its absence always heralding a sigh of disappointment from consolers everywhere.

If this materialises, it’s likely that the service will come alongside the upcoming Playstation Now launch, which will also be facilitating the streaming of PS3 titles.

Given that the competition between Playstation 4 and Xbox ONE has been tipping in the favour of Sony so far, this news, if proven true, will be another nail in the Xbox-shaped coffin the boffins at Sony HQ are constructing, and with the wealth of quality classic titles released on the older Sony machines, there’s plenty there to entice those still on the fence about their next console investment over to the Playstation camp. Let’s hope Microsoft have an ace or two up the sleeve.
