The Sony PlayStation 3 Firmware v2.60 update rolled out to the masses today. Sadly no major enhancements or improvements to make note of, unless you suffered from the dreaded Trophy bug that stopped you form playing particular games such as Wipeout HD and LittleBigPlanetm as well as Syncing Trophies, an Issue that I personally had and I am glad to report is now fixed with the 2.60 update!
The main drive for this update is with the new Photo Gallery application. Like we want one of those, eh PS3 owners? I’ll let Eric Lempel explain the application in more detail:
“The key feature is a new Photo Gallery application, which delivers a suite of tools for sorting through and displaying your digital photo collection. Digital pictures can be organized in groups according to various criteria, including the camera used to take the photos, the event date and time, colors in the photos, as well as the number, ages, or facial expressions of the people pictured. You can also create slideshows set to music and build photo playlists with an easy-to-use interface. The Photo Gallery application will need to be installed separately from the XMB after you update your PS3’s firmware. To install the Photo Gallery application, go to the Photo section on the XMB, select Photo Gallery and press the X button.”
The update also adds a few additional tidbits:
- Guest access to PlayStation Store – This enables non-PlayStation Network members to browse through the storefront to check out the latest games, demos, videos, etc.
- DivX 3.11 support – Videos in this format can now be played on PS3.
For this PS3 user, I am just glad the trophy syncing and updated user error has been fixed, so that I can get back to actually loading up WipeoutHD and finish off the campaign. I doubt ill be using the Photo Gallery application until it as the ability to access photos stored elsewhere, like on a media server and not my PS3’s HDD, just like the music should too, natively. Anyway, enjoy the update PS3 fans, i’m off to…Wipeout!
