PS3 Firmware 1.81 Now Available

If it wasn’t for the recent appearance of the Official Sony PlayStation Blog we would still be trawling through countless threads on the official forum to get the latest news on PS3 Firmware updates. So it’s of great relief to now find a home for such announcements over at the PlayStation Blog where news has broke of today’s Firmware update, cunningly version named 1.81.

As you can clearly tell we are not being given that rumoured 1.90 update just yet, with its many most-wanted XBM features. Instead this is only just a minor update which addresses ‘a few small issues’, most importantly the RGB Full setting. Director of PlayStation Network Operations, Eric Lempel explains:

“In 1.80 we added an option to the XMB under settings allowing you to choose between RGB Full and Limited. Basically if you are connecting your PS3 to your TV using an HDMI cable, and if your TV supports RGB full range, the picture quality may be improved when this option is set to Full. Some of you pointed out that the Full setting would sometimes revert back to Limited and 1.81 will address this issue. Please keep in mind that this setting is only effective when the PS3 is connected to a TV using an HDMI cable.”

So there you have it, nothing major here and we’ll have to wait for the monthly update before we can play with any new and exciting features.
