Microsoft has revealed more about the latest beta program for the Xbox360 that is currently inviting US gamers to apply.
The beta is to test a new disc format primarily designed to attempt to defeat piracy, with the side effect of providing an extra gigabyte of game data space. It’s not good news for the consumer however, the discs known as xgd3 have an expiry date, meaning that once exposed to air will begin to cloud, rendering them unreadable in 5-6 months.
A spokesman for Microsoft stated “We believe this new disc format, as well as combatting piracy, will also go towards ending the rampant second-hand market that plagues the industry” he continued, “this can only be good news for the console market, allowing publishers to develop bigger and better games for the Xbox360”.
Are you happy to support discs with an expiry date? Let us know in the comments.
