Mass Effect 3 to feature day one DLC

Bioware have announced that Mass Effect 3 will have downloadable content available on launch day. The DLC, which is free to those who have bought the collectors edition, is entitled “From Ashes” and will cost 800 points on Xbox Live.

The following features what could be considered minor spoilers. So if you are looking to go into Mass Effect 3 spoiler free you may want to give the rest of this article a miss.

The DLC will feature a mission, alternate costumes for all squad members, an exclusive weapon and, perhaps most interestingly of all, a character which is a member of the Prothean race, which was thought to be extinct.

The announcement was met with criticism from some who feel it is another example of loyal fans being exploited for as much money as possible and that the content could have been included in the full game if it was ready this early.

Executive Producer defended the decision on twitter saying:“On [Mass Effect 3], content creators completed the game in January & moved onto the “From Ashes” DLC, free w/ the [Collector’s Edition] or you can buy separately,It takes about 3 months from ‘content complete’ to bug-fix, certify, manufacture, and ship game discs,In that time we work on DLC. DLC has fast [certification] and no [manufacturing], so if a team works very hard, they can get a DLC done in time to enjoy it with your first playthrough on day one.”
