You know those Xbox Community Games (or Indie Games) that people develop? Well the service will be extended to Rock Band 2 songs later this year.
Harmonix has said that they want people to create and sell their own music for the game. However not any old person can do this, (e.g Guitar Hero Music Studio), but those with the XNA Creators Club Premium package (thats $99 a year folks), Reaper and Magma programs (no we have no idea what those are), plus the all important Gold Live account will be able to start thinking about custom creations.
They will need to meet the specifications laid out by Harmonix and will be given MIDI gameplay elements before being submitted for review.
Once things are ready, the tracks can be rolled out and royalties to each artist will be paid quarterly. It won’t make creators rich, but it could be some useful money for drinks down the pub.
It could open the paths for unsigned bands to create music and get their songs on Rock Band 2 providing they meet all the requirements. Testing is set to begin in August with a soft launch later this year.
It’ll only be for the Xbox 360 initially but popular music may be made avaliable on the PS3 and Wii, so says Gamastutra.
