GTA IV smashes one-day sales record

Copies may be hard to find in stores, but sales of GTA IV smashed records on Tuesday when the long-awaited crime sim hit shops across the UK.

According to ChartTrack who keep an eye on sales figures, GTA IV has become the fastest-selling game EVER in a period of 24 hours selling a staggering 609,000 copies on just the release day. The figure includes both online and retail sales thanks to transaction data passed onto ChartTrack.

The previous record was 501,000 sales when GTA: San Andreas was released in 2004. However GTA IV has recieved a sales boost thanks to being avaliable on both the Xbox 360 and PS3. Copies of the game on the Xbox 360 edged sales on the PS3 with 335,000 being sold on Microsoft’s machine while 274,000 copies were sold on Sony’s console.

The previous fastest selling Xbox 360 game was Halo 3 in September of last year when it sold 266,000 units in just one day. Meanwhile sales on the PS3 have been somewhat slower with the most recent release prior to GTA IV, Grand Turismo 5: Prolouge selling 80,000 copies back in March.

Figures will rise during the Bank Holiday weekend, but with shortages in stores across the UK, the final figure when official data is released next week, may not reflect the true percentage of Britons wanting a copy of Rockstar’s hit.

We’ll have an update on sales figures next week to see if GTA IV smashes any more records!
