Sales figures from Chart-Track have today revealed that a staggering 926,000 copies of GTA IV have being sold across the UK since the launch on Tuesday 29th April.
In the battle of the consoles, the Xbox 360 came out on top with 514,000 copies having shifted for the Microsoft system which also promises episodic content later in the year. Meanwhile the PS3 managed to sell 413,000 copies, a significant amount for the console which has so far been slow to shift units and software.
The sales combined hit 631,000 copies on the first day alone and according to data GTA V has made more software revenue than any other games during any week this year bar the first week of 2008. When compared to the top-selling games of 2007, it has sold out-sold them all bar the top three best-selling games (FIFA 08, Brain Training and Call of Duty 4)!
Hardware sales are also up, especially with the PS3 which has seen sales rise by 127%. The Xbox isn’t doing bad either with sales up 125% last week.
All-in-all then GTA IV has beaten its predecessor GTA: San Andreas for the PS2 in terms of records. However the PS2 game still holds the record for day one and week one records on one format, while the new game is the new record holder for the all-formats chart.
Meanwhile across the world, the game shifted 3.6 million copies on the first day with a further 6 million shifted by the end of the week. Gross profits from the game have hit $500 million in the first week according to Rockstar. That makes it the biggest interactive entertainment title ever and the largest launch seen across even music and movie media.
Rockstar have certainly created a game which has gone down in history, but can the series continue to break records in the future? Tell is your thoughts below!
