The UK retailer GAME has today bought out Gamestation for a whooping 74 million pounds. Despite GAME’s takeover Gamestation stores will not change to GAME and the different brands will be kept separate.
Peter Lewis, GAME chairman said this about their latest acquisition;
“We are delighted to bring Gamestation into our portfolio and believe it has a strong future within the group. The Gamestation business is one we have long admired and is complementary to our existing business in terms of both store portfolio and target customers.”
“By investing in both brands we will further enhance the group’s retail strategy while continuing to deliver and broaden our consumer reach. I am confident that this transaction will add considerable value to GAME and its shareholders over the coming years,”
GAME said the acquisition was due to Gamestations presence amongst the more hardcore gamers compared to their own stores, which are in their eyes more mainstream. Personally I view them as one and the same so I don’t see how they came to that conclusion.
One problem with this being GAME have lost their biggest competitor so expect game prices to stay at their usual high price in the various GAME retail outlets dotted throughout the UK.
