EA’s Origin Will be ‘Better’ Than Steam

David DeMartini, EA’s senior VP of global e-commerce has said that their new digital delivery service ‘Origin’ will be a “better version” of Valve’s popular Steam.

Origin has quite a mountain to climb, Steam is currently the most popular digital delivery service available to gamers. Although this hasn’t phased DeMartini who has likened Origin to Facebook, saying that it came along and stole all of MySpace’s limelight, much like EA plan to do with Steam.

“If MySpace had stayed the one answer in social networking and no one switched to Facebook, then we’d all be stuck on MySpace right now and we wouldn’t have had the Facebook phenomenon,” said DeMartini.

“There are better mousetraps that ultimately get built out of this innovation and the only way you get to the innovation is to have other people try and do a better version of what someone has previously done. And that’s what we’re attempting to do on Origin.

“Gabe was quick to point out in the first time he ever spoke about Origin publicly that he didn’t think we’d achieved that yet. I would agree with that – we’re on a path of constant improvement,” he told MCV.

“I didn’t expect to be able to out-feature Steam within the first 12 months. But I’m quite optimistic we will differentiate ourselves as a service. We’ve built the foundation and now we are starting to add value to the service off of that foundation.”

Amid various critisicm’s, EA revealed that Origin’s first year was a great ‘success’, as for overthrowing Steam, that remains to be seen.

Despite a long absence from gaming, during which he spent many a night reminiscing about the glory days on Halo 2, Matty is now back online smashing his way through Black Ops and soon enough Gears of War 3 and Battlefield 3.
