Direct TV on the Xbox 360

It comes to our surprise when we hear about news such as this slipping through the radars of many gaming sites as well as dedicated 360 sites and after a month of its announcement all it took is an article in the current OXM to raise this news back up to the surface.

As we have just mentioned, in this months Official Xbox Magazine (and a month ago on GameShout) there has been reports of Direct TV and Microsoft announcing plans to bring digital TV to the Xbox360 as well as PCs running the Windows operating system.

This would give the 360 extra kudos points when in the running against the Sony PS3 which is also rumored to have a similar Digital Video Recorder system which enables you to play and record Direct TV content. We don’t know what implications this will have on the 360’s HDD and its limited 20Gb available space. Perhaps the 360 will make used of external storage devices such as USB drives in order to store recorded material?

A few rumors have risen from OXM’s Rumor Mole. It is mentioned that a Direct TV blade might be added to your Xbox360 dashboard to accompany the Xbox Live, Games, Media and Systems blade. From within the Direct TV blade you could download TV episodes in High Definition, HD movies on demand and standard definition streaming using DVR functions similar to Tivo and Sky+ systems on the market today.

No further official information has been released from Microsoft as to when we can expect this to appear on our very own dashboards, as soon as we hear more we will keep you informed.
