What We’ve Been Playing – August 2011

Summer closes its doors as we leave August behind and enter a few good months of this year’s gaming season! Before we do it’s time to look back over the past month of August in our regular feature cunningly known asMonster Month. A handful of Console Monster staff are here to report on what they have been playing over the past month, as well as an insight in the games they are looking forward to playing this month. Enjoy!

It’s hard to believe August is coming to an end and that the big game releases are approaching.

With very little in the way of new releases this month, my time was spent playing quite a mixed bunch of titles; FIFA 11, Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Madden NFL 06, The Simpsons Games and The Orange Box all received sufficient playtime.

On top of that, I finally got round to finishing Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, just in time for the next in the series in November, and recent release, Call of Juarez: The Cartel, rounded the month up nicely.

Returning to such titles gave my GamerScore a much-needed boost as I’m now well on the way to the 100,000 mark, having hit the 94,000 GamerScore barrier this month.

As for September, the winter release massacre begins with Gears of War 3. I can’t describe how excited I am for that one. Driver: San Francisco and FIFA 12 are also on the radar

August is always an exciting month, the build up to Modern Warfare 3, Battlefield 3, Gears 3, FIFA 12 and Madden 12 has only just begun and already I’m hooked (and soon to find myself with a very light wallet).

Still enjoying my Black Ops even after losing faith a month or so back, but really looking forward to getting a hold of Battlefield 3 and cracking some skulls. I have decided yet again to not purchase the latest Black Ops map pack, I’m content with what i’ve got now and with MW3 only a few weeks away I really see no point either.

Outside of gaming this has indeed been a busy month, sporting season has begun. The Eagles have gone mad in the Free Agency and The Toon are winning, shame my fantasy teams aren’t following suit, oh well.

This months monster gaming quote is the Cole Train, “I see you chillin…I’m bout to heat ya up!”

Sadly, I lost my Xbox for most of August so my gaming took a major hit as that’s my platform of choice but it did allow me to go back to some PC, 3DS and PSP games that have been waiting patiently to be played.

As I type this my Xbox is still sitting somewhere in Germany being repaired (for the second time this month) and I’m going a bit crazy staring at my copy of Deus Ex while everyone tweets about how awesome it is. Before it went in for repairs I did manage to play through Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood and the ending left me wondering what on earth is going on (as usually with an AC game) and wanting revelations even more!

Going back to my PC for some gaming time was actually quite nice as I decided to play through some older titles again such as Half-Life 2 and The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind but most of my time went on Terraria. There nothing better then building yourself a little hut, fighting off the hordes of zombies at night time and digging so far under the earth that you find lava and then make your friend fall in it! Fun!

The only other game I put any real time into was Zelda OoT on the 3DS which is just a nostalgic overload every time I play it and I always find myself losing (in a good way!) multiple hours at a time!

Hopefully my Xbox will be returned to me before the mountain of awesome games comes out next month…fingers crossed!

August was a pretty decent month for gaming. Didn’t have too many new releases for me, but I did get chance to go back to a few games I hadn’t played in a while or had never gotten around to playing in the first place.

I finally unlocked all the endings in Catherine, and mopped up most of the achievements, apart from the insanely hard ones. Started playing Rock Band 3 again and have almost convinced myself to drop the cash on the keyboard peripheral. And after years of putting it off, I finally went out and bought Metal Gear Solid 4. I’d played the previous games years ago and had always wanted to try the latest installment but just never got around to it. I’m about halfway through the game, and so far I’m loving it.

As for any new games on the slate this month, I’ve been having fun with Deus Ex: Human Revolution and No More Heroes: Heroes’ Paradise. Deus Ex is not quite what I expected, but has a very unique feel to it, and really makes you think about how you should approach a situation. No More Heroes is a classic hack and slash with some very cool twists. I’ve been wanting to try it out since I saw it debut on the Wii. After playing Shadows of The Damned, and now this, I’m pretty sure I’m officially a Suda51 fan.

Next month is looking pretty solid. My only purchase being Gears of War 3, but I am excited to check out (aka GameFly) Dead Island and the first ‘mature’ game for the Kinect, Rise of Nightmares.

August has just flown by and again it was a month where I didn’t seem to get much gaming in. The past three weeks have been pretty hectic for me mainly because of work. I’m currently going for double promotion and while I’m unlikely to get one of the posts available, it’s been a great experience for me. When I get home after a hard days work, and I’ve not got football, the girlfriend isn’t round and there’s no decent TV on I finally get the chance to play some games.

I have however managed to move my brother’s PS3 into my room mainly so I can play against some of the guys from my work at FIFA 11. I have a pretty good record on FIFA 11 and without sounding big headed, I’m pretty sure I’m the best FIFA player on this site. If you feel you have what it takes then contact me via twitter (@dvx_uk) or on our forums for a game.

Away from FIFA the rest of my gaming has been spent trying to reach 9th prestige on Black Ops. It’s such a silly game but I can’t stop playing whenever I get a free moment. Currently I logged a whopping 8 days 10 hours into the game, which I think is above the average COD player these days.

I’ll end with two exciting words, FIFA Twelve!!

So August has been more about designing and making games than actually playing them. Making games has proven to be a very tricky adventure, where you almost have to put horse reins on yourself to prevent you from overcomplicating your overall game plan and packing it full of crazy features, else said game will never get finished. So it has been a very good learning experience being in the other side of the gaming industry. As soon as I can divulge more info about this game you’ll be one of the first to know.

The most game time I’ve had is with the Arcade title – From Dust, which turned out to be much better than I was expecting. There is something very Lemmings vs Populus vs Black & White about it. I found it to be a great ‘kick back and play’ kind of game, and in later levels it has been a game that actually needed some thinking time. I’m four levels away from completing the game, and overall From Dust has been a great game. It is great to see fresh approaches in gaming like this being made.

I hope to get more time with Bastion and Deus Ex: Human Revolution in September and of course we have the Battlefield 3 Beta – although I am expecting the same maps and modes that I played in the Pre-Alpha. I am sure I am not the only one that would love to try out some new vehicles and of course the jets!

That is all until next month. Why not let us know what have YOU been playing this past month, leave us your gaming antics in the comments below! Until next month, happy gaming to all our fellow Monsters!
