Modder Ports Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer to Legendary Edition Following BioWare Shutdown

A team of modders has successfully ported Mass Effect 3’s multiplayer mode into the Mass Effect Legendary Edition, making the feature available with the remastered graphics and engine improvements of the 2021 re-release. The announcement comes shortly after the closure of BioWare, the original developer behind the series. The mod is set for release on N7 Day, 7 November, and will be free for those who already own the Legendary Edition on PC.

The multiplayer mode was notably absent from the Legendary Edition when it launched in 2021, despite maintaining a dedicated following from the original game. This gap has now been addressed through this modding project, originally undertaken by the ME3Tweaks team, who have been working on content related to the Mass Effect series for several years.

Details of the Multiplayer Porting Project

Mgamerz, lead developer of the ME3Tweaks group, shared insights into the scale and complexity of the project undertaken. Porting the multiplayer component was described as a significant technical challenge, as the content and infrastructure for multiplayer are distinct from the single-player campaigns included in Legendary Edition. The team had to recreate and adapt assets rather than simply transferring them across.

The modders rebuilt lighting using Unreal Engine 4’s light solver to improve visual fidelity compared to the original Unreal Engine 3 lighting system used in Mass Effect 3. This process enhances shadow quality and the overall look of multiplayer maps. Additionally, improvements were made to character meshes, including activating higher-quality models not utilised in the original release.

Development on the port began at the end of 2023, with early prototypes showing functional multiplayer within the first month. The project saw periods of delay, including a six to eight month setback after a team member suffered an injury, but persistent work over almost three years led to the current build.

Impact on Platform Availability and Legacy Servers

The mod is currently released on PC via Nexus Mods and requires ownership of the Mass Effect Legendary Edition. There are no announced plans for console support. This mod offers a continuation of multiplayer access after Electronic Arts announced the shutdown of BioWare, and the future of the original matchmaking services is uncertain.

As of the announcement, EA’s N7HQ matchmaking servers remain online but have faced discontinuation speculation. The mod will allow fans to continue playing multiplayer with improved game technology independent of official server support. The release date of 7 November coincides with the annual N7 Day celebrations dedicated to the Mass Effect franchise.

This community-led initiative revives a key multiplayer experience missing from the Legendary Edition, preserving it for current gen PC players and enhancing it with graphical updates from the remaster. Ownership of the base Legendary Edition is required to access the mod and the multiplayer content it restores.
