Spotify to be PlayStation-exclusive for ‘foreseeable future’, launches today

Spotify will be exclusive to PlayStation consoles for the “foreseeable future”, according to Sony.

Speaking to Eurogamer, Murray Pannell, UK marketing director for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, said: “PlayStation have gaming exclusivity. How long? That’s to be decided exactly, but certainly for the foreseeable.”

The free app, which has gone live on the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 today (Monday, March 30th, 2015), is set to replace Music Unlimited – Sony’s own music streaming service, and works with free and premium Spotify accounts. A PlayStation Plus membership is not required.

Pannell added: “The partnership still means we’re in music, but is also the foundation of our music strategy going forward. It’s going to be really good for us.”

The Spotify app has launched in 41 countries worldwide. They are: Andorra, Austria, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Malta, Mexico, Monaco, New Zealand, Netherlands, Norway, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Singapore, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey, UK and USA.
