Marathon: Durandal Review

Marathon Durandal is the second in a series of games that were originally released for the Macintosh computer by, the one and only, Bungie. This series of games has many similarities with the stories from another well known Bungie franchise, Halo. Durandal is one of the 3 AIs aboard Marathon and brings the player and a group of other soliders to the home world of the S’pht, Lh’owon.

The graphics of this game have been improved compared to the Mac version of the game. Plus this version is also in HD. However the overall look of the levels are very plain and drab, which can lead you to believe the same of the story, but this isn’t true. The sound isn’t all that great. The sound effects mostly consist of the same gun fire, sped up in the case of the machine gun. The music, however, suits the mood of the game perfectly, pumping up the adrenaline when needed.

Gameplay mainly consists of exploring different areas, collecting weapons and killing anything ugly that might cross your path. As well as the single player game, there are additional features such as multiplayer with game modes familiar to fans of the Halo games. One example is Kill The Man With The Ball, which is very similar to Oddball, where you have to keep hold of a ball for a set amount of time to earn points to win. There is also a co-op mode, where you work together with 4 others to complete the story. There is also a new mode exclusive to the Live Arcade release, called Survival, where you are given weapons and ammo and you must fight off wave after wave of enemies.

This is definitely worth a look, if your trying to find a FPS to rival the likes of DOOM from around that era. This is one of the best FPS titles for the Live Arcade, alongide DOOM.
