Who would have thought that 13 years ago Sony would have released a console that would change the gaming industry around the world, sadly today we hear that Sony has finally ceased production and as such we won’t see another new PS2 run through Sony’s doors.
There were a number of reasons why the PS2 was so succesful, most notably its inclusion of a free DVD drive giving gamers the chance to watch their favourite films without having to switch on another machine and sort out what DVD case contained which game and vice versa. In comparison the console was pretty cheap releasing at $299, two hundred dollars shy of it’s younger brother the PS3.
Sony also put a lot of work into making PS2 games gleam and that they did, there was quite a sudden jump in graphics when compared to PS1 games and consoles around it at the time. Not forgetting a plethora of accessories that were now available to gamers from DVD remotes to cameras.
As the console sits down to rest it can boast a games library of 11,000 titles and has now sold close to 154 million consoles. Games are still having content released with a Final Fantasy DLC coming in March of this year that just shows you that the PS2 has well and truly stood the test of time.
RIP Playstation 2, you will be missed.
