Reflecting on how our gaming experience has evolved as the PS5 hits the shops

We all have our own preferences when it comes to what we do in our free time, and thanks to the technology we have today, there are more options than ever before.

For many, playing video games is always a popular choice. It’s a great way to have fun and meet new friends when you play online. With the rise in esports, which is growing to become a billion-pound industry, it can even be a career choice for certain players.

The PlayStation 5 – Did you get yours?

The release of the PlayStation 5 in November has been the talk of the gaming world in recent weeks. Sony has provided a console that is almost unrivalled in its capabilities. In terms of power and performance, it should ensure players have the best possible gaming experience yet. Such is the excitement surrounding the release, a significant proportion of shops in the UK sold out of the PS5 almost instantly. As a result, players are constantly searching online in the hope that they can find one but, with the extreme demand, these finds are rare.

This illustrates the important role that gaming can play in people’s lives, in terms of entertainment, socialising, and potentially as a means of earning a living. Here we will look at how that has evolved over time.

The early days

To look back at when gaming consoles first became available, we would have to start in 1967. That’s when Ralph H Baer, who was known as ‘The Father of Video Games’, displayed his initial prototype of the Brown Box. As you would expect, it was pretty basic and involved hooking the box up to the TV, allowing you to play a small selection of games.

Perhaps the first major breakthrough to what we have today arrived five years later. The Magnavox Odyssey was the first official home video game console that more people will remember. Although there was no sound when you played and the graphics were basic.

The 80s boom

As the popularity and demand for these games started to grow, major companies recognised that it was a chance to offer something to a wide audience. So, better technology was developed, and higher quality releases were common over the next few years.

One name that came on the scene in the late 70s was Nintendo, but they initially only released consoles in Japan. However, that was the beginning of what was a formative period for gamers in the 1980s.

With the emergence of new technology, there was a sharp rise in what was available to gamers, both in terms of consoles and a wide range of games. SEGA was another reputable name in the industry at that time and during the 80s the SG-1000, the Mega Drive, and the Nintendo Entertainment System were released.

First PlayStation released

Constant improvements were made as the years went by, with Sony releasing the first PlayStation in 1994. By this time, SEGA and Nintendo had established themselves as leaders in the market, so it was hard to muscle in on that without a quality, reliable product. The PlayStation was just that, and the 90s signalled a new era of gaming for players. Due to its success, further PlayStations were released in a relatively short period of time.

Mobile gaming emerges

There was a significant change in the gaming industry in 2007, when mobile gaming became prominent. Beloved but basic, Snake was a global hit in 1997. However, it took until the first iPhone release for mobile gaming to really transform. The appeal of playing on your phone was obvious; you can do it on the move. If your phone was in your hand, you could play. This advancement was fully embraced and continues to be a popular form of entertainment today.

Whether it’s popular gaming titles developed from console games or casino classics like blackjack and roulette, these games are available at all times. The latter has proven to be particularly popular, and somewhat of a groundbreaking stride in the industry, with this article highlighting the range of options available to players; such as free spins and welcome bonuses. It really highlights the growth of the industry through the sheer volume of offerings available, and the competition between providers to release the next best thing. This rivalry appears to be a prevalent and overarching theme in both console and mobile gaming, whether that be via an online casino, or an app store.

The here and now

From a console perspective, further strides have been made in recent years as well. Again, it’s down to the technology available, which has increased standards across the board. The emergence of the Xbox from Microsoft gave players another quality option to choose from. Meanwhile, new PlayStation consoles have been regularly released, whilst Nintendo has had success with the Wii. So, there are rightly a lot of expectations on the PS5, and players will be hoping that it’s better than anything they’ve played on before.

This brief history of gaming chronicles the many developments made since 1967, and that there’s never been a better time to be a player in terms of the innovative technology available to us. The PS5 exemplifies this, and it could just be the start of another exciting period for gamers.
