Everyone who has ever watched a film or DVD will have collated a long list of quotes that will have been burnt into their minds. There's the iconic “Run Forrest, run” being screamed by some jock at a nerd clumsily tripping over his own feet on the running track. Not forgetting Screams “what's your favourite scary movie?” being crackled across a brick of a mobile phone.
Then there's those unforgettable words muttered by Clint Eastwood, “The question you've gotta ask yourself is do you feel lucky, well do ya, punk?” Maybe you prefer Robin Williams “Good morrrrrning Vietnam” as you wake up to a beautiful blue sky on your day off. Personally I do enjoy Ron Burgundy's “Stay classy San Diego” from Anchorman.
Whatever quote you reach for when the time sees fit rest assured you'll always have something to use. So with the world of gaming exponentially growing by the day you have to wonder what quotes have found their way in to your sub-conscious thoughts.
Gaming cut scenes, plots, actors employed and animation are all being vastly improved to make for a movie like performance, so with all that in mind Console Monster is taking its readers on, an at times nostalgic, look into the subconscious of the website's pet Monster. Whilst we root around the Monsters mind we'll be unearthing some of our favourite quotes from the games of today and of games gone by.

What better way to start than with one of the more marmite games on the Xbox and Xbox 360. Halo is a game that has either received bucket loads of praise from press and fans alike, or is panned to such a degree that after reading a review you almost feel like you’re committing a crime when you play it. Whichever way you look at Halo it has still been an undeniable success, this is mostly due to CE's campaign and Halo 2's online multiplayer. Then there's that small phrase that will live in the mind and thoughts of everyone who has ever enjoyed plugging a Grunt.
“Runawaaaaaay” the simple cry that was heard by everyone as you went sprinting towards a group of grunts, Battle Rifle in hand, the pin in your sticky grenade pulled and a giant smile on your face as you think of the destruction that was about to ensue. Like a few of our quotes in the list there isn't much to it, but it is still just as unforgettable as the next.
Grunts did in fact have a great deal of phrases in any one of the Halo games released by Bungie and of course there were a number of inspirational quotes uttered by Master Chief and many other characters in the series. The thing is a Grunt screaming “runawaaaaay” encapsulates what was so great about Halo, a very hard game at times that would immerse you for hours on end. Though when you heard one of the critters screaming you knew you were in for a few minutes of blood soaked fun as you dispatched hundreds of them with imperative ease.
The next quote that pops out of the Monster's mind takes us to a charred battlefield with two army's facing off. To our left a flag waving with a blue eagle insignia and on the other side a scorpions tail in a glowingly evil dark red. Welcome to the strategic world of Red Alert.
The quote the Monster has gone for is probably the few words you hear before your base turns into to nothing but a smoke filled cavern - “Nuclear Launch Detected”. Ah yes, despite your best efforts and sending every available unit to your enemy's missile silo you still have to watch and wait for that missile to land on top of your construction yard. It then proceeds to destroy every building that you have tirelessly worked for and listen to the screams of your troops as they are incinerated by the resulting fireball. Everyone hated the warning, hence why it is so memorable.

Next the Monster brings out a quote often said by the lovable Abe, from Abes Odyssee, as he tried to get his fellow Mudokons safely through the various levels in the game.
“Let’s go” swiftly followed by a chorus of “Ok”, was what you would hear before you attempted to out maneuver your foes. At the same time as trying to keep your own hide safe you had to worry about your colleagues, who were pretty thick, and if they didn’t have Abe to hold their hands they would no doubt be tenderized into bite size chunks at the Rupture Farms. The quote is a classic; it reminds gamers that not every game is about being the lone wolf and thinking only of number one. Instead “Let’s go”, “Ok” makes you think about the little guy, the underdog, and that’s why we love it.
“Get Over Here”. Everyone should instantly be imagining a masked fighter clothed in a yellow tunic and slinging about an arrow head attached to a very long piece of rope. These are of course the immortal words shouted by Scorpion before impaling and dragging you across the floor, then executing his own form of punishment, mainly aimed at your face.
The quote which was voiced by Ed Boon was created simply because Ed thought it would be funny, he even mentioned the phrase saying, “I just thought it would be funny to have him yell out 'Get over here!' when he did it. So they just said 'Well, why don't you get behind the microphone and do it.'”. Whatever way you look at it, if you hear that quote, then you know you’re about to be introduced to a whole world of pain.
Continuing on through the catacombs of the Monsters mind we come across a quote which was uttered only to cause shame towards those playing Theme Hospital - “The Hospital Administrator is cheating”. This was announced on your Hospitals tanoy as a way of embarrassing you when you had successfully entered a cheat. The game was simply trying to give you some integrity, maybe after hearing the announcement you would go back and cancel the cheat. Let’s be honest though, if anything, it made you want to cheat more.

We now bring you back to more modern times. To a game that is questionably one of the best titles to be released on the Xbox 360. Gears of War 3 puts gamers in control of the undeniably unstoppable Marcus Fenix as he battles to destroy the oncoming Locust Hordes. Using a variety of weapons you can kill, murder and maim your enemies. Be it via Marcus’s chainsaw, a grenade, maybe even a quick shot to the head with a sniper rifle.
What is arguably the most enjoyable way to kill the Locust, which is also where this quote originates, is by introducing one of your enemies to Marcus’s boot. “SUCK PAVEMENT” the final words that each one of your victims will hear when they get to see what’s on the underside of your shoes. The next bit involves a blood drenched screen and bits of brain littering your uniform, I’m sure you get the general idea as to why this is such a powerful quote.
The Monster is starting to get weary, but we’ll get a couple more quotes out, and what a gem it’s chosen for this penultimate phrase. It originated on the Playstation One version of this multi-million dollar selling game. When you heard this word you knew that your game was over, it would be the quote that you’d here over and over again, so much so that you would become clinically insane.
“SNAAAAAAAAKE”. Over and over again you’d find yourself hearing Colonel Campbell yelling for Snake only to realize that you had just been shot. We are of course talking about the game Metal Gear Solid. You play as Solid Snake a special ops soldier from the group FOXHOUND and your task is to infiltrate Shadow Moses Island and take down your nemesis Liquid Snake. Although when playing on the harder difficulties, Snake found himself in a whole world of hurt. Usually the final thing you would hear after an 8 hour stint on Metal Gear Solid was Campbell screaming for Snake. A truly irreplaceable quote.

It’s nearly time for the Monster to go off to his bed, but before he goes there is one final quote to be heard. This is without question one of the most memorable lines to be used in the gaming world.
“Its-a me, Mario”, the phrase used by a little Italian, who goes by the name Mario. First heard in the game Super Mario 64, the phrase has since seen use in various other titles involving little Mario (or big dependant on what he’d eaten). Even now as you walk down the street you will hear people using the phrase as they mock a man with a rather large moustache, or someone wearing a farmer’s hat. It truly is a timeless quote and it’s the perfect line to end this article on.
There are countless more quotes that are just as memorable as the ones above, so we’d love to hear what your favourite is in the comments box below.
