Two new PlayStation 3 SKUs have recently hit store shelves and gamers have been snapping them up if recent reports are anything to go by. It has been reported by GamesIndustry.biz that PS3 sales have jumped 178% last week which has helped Sony’s platform reach its third highest week since its launch in the UK.

Regardless of the PS3’s triumphant sales, Nintendo’s DS was still the best-selling games platform in the UK, followed by the Wii and then the PS3, with the Xbox 360 bringing up the rear.

Both of the PS3 SKUs were introduced last Wednesday. The first being a 40GB SKU featuring no backward compatibility support and less USB ports that sells for £299, while the full featured 60GB SKU has been reduced to £349 and is bundled with two free first-party games.

With the recent surge of PS3 sales, software for the platform has also increased, this is shown in the recent all format chats where Resistance: Fall of Man has climbed from positions 22 to 8, Heavenly Sword re-entered the chart from at 14, MotorStorm from 22 to 18, and Formula 1: Championship Edition re-entered the chat at number 24.

So it’s been a good week for Sony as well as gamer’s wallets. Have you recently jumped on-board the PS3 band wagon? Let us know below.
