Right, I am doing GCSE IT at the moment, its a bit crappy becuase we just "learn" about how to do forumla's on a spreadsheet. Do typing excericises and all that, the sort I could do with my eyes closed. Preidicted an 'A' on it.

But, I wanted to doing something in higher education to do with it, so went to a college open eveninig a few nights back and saw and IT course I liked the sound of. T'is a National Diploma in IT Software Development. Im 90% sure I want to take this course.

I did however get told, that it would differ to school as we would do more in-depth stuff and actually learn new stuff, rather than gonig over the stuff that we already know. I saw that we would start off the 1st term learning HTML.

So, I basically wanted to start learning it from home, on my own. I saw a few people on here say that they have tought themselve's it, and I want to be able to do the same. So, where did you guys start, what programs, CD's, websites, techniques did you guys use? Just want to learn the basics 1st hopefully, before I start college next September.

Would appriciate any help anyone is willing to give.

I learnt the hard way, trial and error basically. Its an annoying and rewarding experience at times. Like anything the more you keep at it the quicker it will set itself into your common knowledge and you wont be needed to reach for the Dummys Guides and other reference places.

That said I do find my self dipping in and out of google searches for scripts and things need to know about so surfing for tutorials, basic ones would be a handy (and cheap)way to start.

I did do a bit of web design a year ago and got really into it and had great fun. Now I am grateful for having experience as I am taking a 2 year DiDA course which will give me 4 GCSE's at the end of the 2 years (if I pass) which is the same as you correct? I just started moving onto the real thing today after spending 60 hours on a practise, luckily I have a great layout with Javascript and CSS to get me 10/10 for layout and appearance.

Yeah W3Schools is extremely helpful and I have learnt quite a bit from there. Before I used Dreamweaver I used to go into the exampls on W3Schools and go into the HTML editor page and test out my HTML skills there. Another site that has helped me out quite a bit is www.htmlgoodies.com . That and W3Schools are very helpful. ^_^

When I started learning it was a combination of sites like that and just general messing around to see what I could come up with that got me going.

Also if you're serious about it a decent reference book wouldn't go a miss, and if you're looking to get more into webdesign in general then look up Dreamweaver. Although if you're starting a fresh learning to hand code before realying on Dreamweaver would definately be more beneficial.

Yeah, I already acquired Dreamweaver.

Im a bit all over the place with it though. Got some good tuts for it on this CD.

The best site that I have found for learing HTML would have to be HTML Goodies. ( http://www.htmlgoodies.com ) And for programs I have used Dreamweaver in the past. ( http://www.macromedia.com/software/studio/ ) I have been into site design for over one year.
