Default Yet another reason to buy a 360 and not a PS3

Sony has patented technology for Blu-Ray that makes a disc usable only in the first machine where the disc is put in to. Patent even has the following quote:

"By means of the present invention as described above, the following effects are obtained. Since only titles for which legitimate software has actually been purchased and which have been initially registered in the machine table can be used, resale (so-called used software purchase) after purchase by an end-user becomes practically impossible. When data recorded on a disk is illegally copied in full, since the exact pattern of the verification data cannot be recreated, the manufacture of counterfeit software becomes extremely difficult, and simple copying to a recording medium becomes meaningless. "

Imagine the possibilites!

No more piracy!
No more used games!
No more lending games to your friends!
No way to play games that you have bought if your PS3 breaks!

Wow, sucky.

Not being able to sell games on eBay/trade them into shops will put a lot of people off, as will not being able to take games round to friends' houses.

You're cutting down on piracy, yes, but you're going to lose a lot of sales with something like this. And imagine if the quality of the PS3 is similar to the quality of the PS2 (loads of people having to replace them, for example) - does that mean people will have to buy their favourite games again as well?

Sounds a bit stupid, that.

I think it is quite sad making jokes over the PS3 when it will obviously be better than the 360.

EDIT: Awaits ban

My god!

That is the most horrific idea I have ever heard! Imagine not being able to go down to the video store to rent a PS3 game to try before you buy. Can't happen! Imaging buying a game from EB and they won't let you return it within 7 days because it's already been used on your PS3, thus rendering it un-sell-able!

The anit-piracy thing is the only good aspect of this idea...this has seriously sent Sony down the sh*tter...whoever thought this up should be sacked and sent to a looney bin!

Probably the same person that decided to put only two controller ports on the PS2.

Actually, probably not, seeing as they should have been sacked already.

The thing is, though, surely Sony would make a statement about this rumour being wrong if it was indeed wrong.

They won't want rubbish rumours floating about which could put a major damper on sales, like this one could. This is a really major issue, and the fact that Sony have done nothing to deny that it is going to be a feature of the PS3 is quite worrying. They can make their "Sony doesn't respond to rumours" crap all the want, but the longer they do that the more it looks like this rumour is fact.

hmm...Sony have only Patented it, this doesn't mean that they'll actually use it. They've just reserved the rights for all blu-ray technology so that no-one else can use it. If Sony are as stupid as they're looking to be, then they'll use this stupid blu-ray anti-piracy crap. If they're smart(er) then they'll state that they wont actually be implementing it..
