Would you if you had the option, knowing that all PS3 games would work on it, would you drop the Blu-Ray Drive for a DVD Drive instead?
Now the reason I ask this, is I would buy the PS3 in a flash but its too much and I personally can't afford to pay for a Movie format that might not work out, and its going to make the games more expensive (I assume) than Xbox 360 games. I realise this isn't going to happen but its worth a consideration from a purely fictional view. |

It would of definatly beaten Xbox 360 if it did drop Blu-Ray as with its well-known Brand Name and there previous succeses the only thing at the moment that is going to slow them down is cost of the console and the games. |

There's no question that Blu-Ray is better technology, but does anyone remember the BetaMax vs VHS?
Well BetaMax by Sony was better technology than VHS, but it didn't succeed. Why? The cost. As much as twice the price than VHS. Currently the Blu-Ray has a storage capacity of 54GB (or thereabouts). HD-DVD has around the 30GB mark. We don't need anymore than 9GB (dual layer discs) to play games - unless you have a whole film in CGI put on the disc! i.e. Metal Gear 4 will have that much CGI and no actuall gameplay, probally that only time Blu-Ray will matter as most games are cross platform. Or HD-DVD is also the choice for the Home Cinema DVD production companies aswell. Only Sony's picture houses will use the Blu-Ray. It will be war when picture companies are battling for directors and writiers to sign for them. Cya's

I don't think the Blu-Ray drive is useful to play games, its only a movie format that Sony are trying to push, that really isn't a problem I have, its that this is going to cost me extra. Its cheaper to buy Xbox 360 and a Nintendo Wii than a PS3, and thats just ridiculous. |

Yeah!!!
No doubting the technology and specification of the PS3. Really Impressive but personally Sony has priced itself out. £450 No way. Yes it will still sell by the bucket load but the many gamers who just by a console to play quality games for a quality price I believe will opt for a 360. You mean where was I?...eh...canoeing. |

Well. Yeah, I did. But then you said that 'maybe the Core should've been without Blu-Ray'. I wasn't entirely confident you understood that they're using games on it, because you've said it's only a movie format (more than once, now). I'm not sure I agree with you, because I don't see what's stopping someone from saying the same about DVDs. Give more to 'think about'.

DVDs are more than just a Movie Format if thats what your hinting at, as nearly every game now is on a DVD dues to the space it offers, yet even for a large console title about 30% of it unused. My argument contains alot of assumptions and changes in Sony Policy but I think it would have been a better solution. If you don't agree thats fair enough, Just a thought. I won't say Think about it, as it looks like you have already gave it some thought. damien© ||Damien Healy

It's not 'essential' for movies either. But presumably, on a Blu-Ray disc you could have more high-def, pre-rendered cutscenes, if not larger levels or more detailed textures.
But, I agree with you in spirit. The Blu-Ray gamble is a way to -push- their Blu-Ray movies, in trying to repeat PS2's DVD successes. Only this time, Sony get to do it with their own format. And, that could be why the console is more expensive. But I honestly think the Cell is what's pushing the PS3 past the $400 mark. Without the Cell, with a more traditional CPU set up (maybe a dual core?), Sony could probably absorb the expense of the Blu-Ray drives. I don't think the games themselves are going to be more expensive than 360 games. To view links or images in signatures your post count must be 10 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. Blu-Ray will be very expensive. Reports suggesting that their dvd systems will retail from £1000 to ????. That's why PS£ is expensive...but if Sony's cheapest on the market is what's the quality or version or the features packed on the system.
Blu-Ray was developed with the ericsson dept (mobile phones) hence Blu-Tooth that was first on ericsson phones (has one many years ago with the shark fin ariel). The DVD was del' by Philips first then Sony jumped on the band wagon and helped them promote it (DVD), they also dev' SACD with Philips. That's why when the ps2 came out there were shortages as Philips couldn't produce DVD players/drives quick enough for them. Sony went their own way..... Philips is now a major player in the HD-DVD with Toshiba. Sony you never learn. |
