Default Some N64 classics in doubt for Revolution

That's a bitter pill...although half expected by most people I guess.

Latest word from GDC suggests Nintendo's virtual console won't see any backdated Rare love, including classics like Perfect Dark and Goldeneye

Reports coming out of the US from the Games Developers Conference are suggesting that Nintendo's Virtual Console service (its planned retro classics downloads for Revolution) will lack some of the big name games belonging to the now Microsoft-owned Rare.

Apparently both Microsoft and Rare staff have confirmed to IGN that back catalogue Rare titles like Perfect Dark, Banjo-Kazooie, Jet Force Gemini and Conkers Bad Fur Day won't make it onto the retro download service. Perhaps most importantly of all the seminal Goldeneye will also be MIA, unless both Rare and new license holder EA manage to agree a deal.

That's got to be a major blow for prospective Revolution owners looking forward to some tasty retro treats, but looking on the brighter side, Rare titles which are owned by Nintendo including Donkey Kong 64 and Diddy Kong Racing will be making an appearance - although we suspect that won't be so much of a consolation.

So we urge EA and Rare to get together and make it happen with Goldeneye, a Virtual Console without Bond would be missing one of its major stars and by the gods of gaming, that's not something we'd like to contemplate on this wet Monday morning.

Gah, rubbish. I really, really wanted Goldeneye as a downloadable title as well. JFG and Perfect Dark are big absentees as well.

Yeah, it really would be a major letdown if Goldeneye wasn't available in some shape or form. It's the one title that pretty much everyone would download, and online it could be utterly fantastic, if they were able to implement some kind of system like that.

It is the best FPS by far. It would be a real let down if RARE didnt supply the classics. I am sure RARE would still be getting a fair cut.

Fingers crossed.

I don't think Rare themselves would have any objection. It's the fact that they're owned by Microsoft now that's going to cause the problems.

Microsoft control them, and they're hardly going to just let Rare's big games from the N64 era be available for download when it'll do absolutely nothing for them, and will instead profit Nintendo.

It's Microsoft who pose the problem, not Rare.

Actually it's more of EA posing the problem...they have the rights to all Bond Licenses now....says it in the main post.

I don't think MS will have much say in the Rare back catalogue..also Rare can still churn out games on DS...they have one coming out some time soon.

I thought they had some handheld-related deal, though, in which they're allowed to still work for Nintendo as long as they do so in the handheld market, as this doesn't directly affect Microsoft. But maybe they won't be bothered... I just thought Microsoft would stick to their money-grabbing techniques and try to do everything they could to prevent a competitor like Nintendo making profit.

Ah well. EA it is, then.

Yeah because they made
BANJO PILOT (looked terrible)
BANJO KAZOOIE GRUNTYS REVENGE(was class)

so that meant there was still some deal.

I just hope the revo gets all the old games
