Default PS3 completely region free for games!

Good move...very good move!

It has been revealed that the Playstation 3 will be region free for gaming. Speaking during his keynote at the GDC, titled "PlayStation 3: Beyond the Box", SCE President Phil Harrison announced the news to the world.

The PS3 will still be region locked for the playback of DVD's. This latest news could give Sony a major advantage in the battle for supremacy of the next-gen consoles.

The 360 is also region free for games I might add but I'm not sure about the Revolution. Now if the PS3 had region free dvd playback as well then that would have been a plus point for many gamers who also use their console as a dvd player. Still the details on either the PS3 or Revolution are a bit fuzzy IMO I don't think any official documentation has been released although I could be completely wrong!

Are you sure the 360 is completely region free? I know that DOA4 could be played on all regions but I thought that was just for that particular game. If it is I think that'd be fantastic though, as games released in the U.S or Japan sometimes never get released over here, and the chance to play them would be great.

As for the PS3, I think it's a great move too, and it shows that Sony are thinking about its fans alot more, maybe due to the delay, so they're making it up to thier fans.

The 360 is region free. It's up to the developer if they want to lock it.
Is kinda a good move. But this means we will never buy (not going to anyway) a PS3 game from the UK again. Because it works out cheaper to get them imported.

Ahhh, thanks for clearing that up, I wasn't too sure myself, but all I hope now is that more developers open the regions.

And that's a good point about the cheaper games, plus you'll get them earlier as in the U.S, games can be released much earlier than over here. So it's a win-win situation (apart from game stores over here , but I bet they'll still get alot of customers).

There's a few PAL games that havn't worked on my American 360 but it's generally region free.

I'm glad they're seeing sense in making things region free. Tob3z, understand what you're saying but it seems to be coming up at the same price to import games from the states these days when you add postage into the equation.

With regards to the DVD thing, are they not obliged to make it region locked due to exactly what Tob3z mentioned, importing from foreign countries? Then again, DVD's are becoming cheaper in the UK and more expensive in America.

You can import games from www.Lik-Sang.com, the US & JAP game prices vary from $50-70 - so from £28-40.

Obviously there's shipping, and if you're unlucky duty, on top but depending on the game you can still import them for cheaper than a lot of UK retailers.

Edit: in fact the games are showing as free worldwide shipping...dunno if this is temporary though..never noticed it before!

Well, despite me not being a future PS3 buyer, this is another piece of good news for me... because it means now that both the 360 and the PS3 are region free, the Revolution probably will be as well. Result!

Couldnt care if it was region free or not. I think its dodgy buying most things from overseas. I think people should just have the long interminably torturing wait like I did with the XBOX

You mean where was I?...eh...canoeing.

Question

I have bought some dvds from other countries even from a thai netshop no problems.
One of the best netshops for DVDs is from a a small town in Australia!!!

Dvdboxoffice.com from canada good deals on everything and very good deals on 360 games, i just checked it out right now.

Free airmail shipping worldwide, a guy i work with he uses this page alot and it doesn't get stop for duty!!!HEHE!!!
(just remember a series boxset is a bit FAT, thats the only thing that can get stoped).
But for this things we have PLAY.COM, they have the best prices and a very good service.
