Default XBOX VP J Allard "Revolution controller my idea"

In an interview with US based website Game Informer, XBOX VP J Allard claimed to have come up with the idea Nintendo are using for their Revolution controller 4 years ago:

Quote:
Four years ago I wrote an email treaty and said, “Why aren’t accelerometers in remote controls? Why can’t I scroll down my channel guide with a gesture instead of up, up, up, up? So I think that’s interesting. We did a lot of research with gamers, talk to a lot of game developers and said, “Should we put an accelerometer in there and do the tilt thing?” And there wasn’t that much enthusiasm around it. Maybe Nintendo will be more persuasive and have more ideas in first party than we did and that will take off. I don’t think that’s the way you’re going to play FIFA. I don’t think it’s the way you’re going to play Madden. I don’t think it’s the way you’re going to play racing games. I think the traditional controller for traditional categories is really going to be what drives that. I don’t think most Electronic Arts games are going to be played with that thing. I think they’re going to be designed for the classic controller.
The controller however has recieved praise from all corners of the industry, including EA themselves. This is simply a blatant attempt at playing it down to try and soften the blow that Nintendo has struck against Microsoft and Sony.

I agree with that. The controller is a revolution in the gaming business and completely different from everything else. I bet Microsoft and Sony just stood there with their jaws dropped to the ground when they first saw it. Despite that, i think Allard is right, that's not the way you would play some games and I just keep thinking how weird it would look swirling that thing around when trying to make a header on FIFA!

It pretty much rules out all sports games bar golf. I personally don't thinking the 'wanking stick' will work, but it's a very interesting idea. Rather stick to the good old fashioned control though.

Completely off-topic. But when I'm 32, I want to be like J Allard.

He's the middle-aged cool guy everyone wants to be.

I'll get it when it's a $100 and then buy up all the first party games.

Personaly I feel the opposite, Everytime he opens his mouth I dislike the X360 a little more. I have always judged a console on my enjoyment of it and the games it offers but with Mr Allard promoting the X360 I already have a dislike for the machine before I have even tried it.

But Nintendo have announce a classic controller for the Revolution, and if you look at the joystick, the revolution controller is AMAZING for FPS.

Yep, it'll catch on, because it just opens up so many new possiblities in the gaming industry. Microsoft and Sony won't use it immediately, but I bet they're wishing they'd thought if implementing something like this.

Great example of just how good it could be: Resident Evil. Imagine the room is completely dark, and where you point the remote on the screen is where a flashlight shines. Think of the typical Resident Evil monster... you know it's there, but you can't quite find it. You'd be frantically shining the light around in an attempt to find it, and when you do, it jumps out of the shadows and right into your face.

That would just be the coolest thing ever. It would completely change the face of survival horror games as we know them. They could actually become physically frightening. It's such a great prospect.

As has been mentioned as well, FPS games will absolutely own on the Revolution. As well as this, Nintendo will no doubt have some great ideas up their sleeves as well.

This is why I'm getting a Revolution. It's going to be so different, and originality is something I need once in a while.

Apparently it is not going to be much more expensive than that when it comes out. I am not sure I believe it will be that cheap, but y'know.

The jury is going to be out on the Revolution - it can work, and I trust Nintendo to get it right. I still have my doubts but I need to get my hands on one before I address them.

Still - if they are gonna be $100 (my guess is they will retail about £99 in the UK, and thus the US price will be closer the $159 mark), you may aswell buy one of the things. You can be assured there will be some AAA titles on it.

Sammy.

Then when the item appears they say, 'oh well I thought of that'. Well if it was your idea patent it, you ----.

He's a clever man, trying to divert the interest.

I know what you mean - but Allard is not a ---- - he's just cool
