Not a mass-market price. Without even looking at the games side. I think this paints an adequate picture of Sony's PS3 strategy. Can focusing on something besides the games side, with a non-mass-market price really maintain a dominant market share?
Also, Maguire gives some indications that "Maybe the early adopter price for PlayStation 3 is really upwards of £2,000, given that retail has a great opportunity to drive HDTV TV sales."

These prices have been adjusted for US Dollars inflation. If we consider the modern era to start with the NES, then nothing at or above the PS3's price point has done well.
