Playstation 3 Firmware Update
Submitted on: 23 May, 2007 13:33 BST
Sony have today announced an update to their Playstation 3 Firmware, now currently sitting at version 1.80.
This latest release features the up scaling of PS1 and PS2 games as well as DVD movies to 1080p HD resolution on supported screens.
Along with that very welcome addition, Version 1.80 allows us to enjoy Remote Play on our PSPs across the internet - meaning we can now access our PS3 from anywhere in the world provided we have a broadband connection.
Other features include the ability to view and play media content such as images, videos and music on the PS3, which are stored on PCs and Laptops. You can now also link up your PS3 to an Epson printer and print photos via a USB connection.
The latest Firmware is available for download on the 24th May 2007.

Right its on there to download now - takes a wee bit of the old time but its worth it. Just popped Resident Evil 4 in and it looks great when upscaled to 1080i..there's also an option to smooth out the ps1/2 games
Just waiting for the downloadble ps1 games to arrive now

I know not exactly the right thread but when it comes to updating the Firmware, how does it work, is it Mandatory like say an Update on the Xbox 360 or can choose whether or not to have it?

Yeah you have the option to update so its not mandatory.

Well it won't find my file servers which are connected to the same router automatically....so if I can be arsed to sort it out I'll shout up.
Is there any way to play files off a USB HDD? Connected mine up but can't see anything on the XMB to show it recognizes it's there.

Yep - i need to find out how it all works and all but what is working is ps2 games upscaled and they look great - tried Resident Evil 4 belter - Devil May Cry 3 - belter and GTA SA - belter
:)
I must say, im quite impressed with this latest update. The Upscaling options are excellent. I tried the last Star Wars Film on DVD @ 1080i, and the picture was excellent, in my opinion not far away from Blue Ray Quality. Im really glad this option has been included because I have about 100+ Original DVDs. I was happy with the quality of DVD's on the PS3 when DVDs played @ 576p, but 1080i is a much superior picture quality in my opinion.
The PS/PS2 Upscaling seems to work very well. I tried Fifa07 @ 1080i( Which now works perfectly BC ). And it looked excellent. God Of War also looked excellent. Now if only the would expand the BC titles, such a GT4 and Tourist Trophy and i'd be extremely pleased.
EDIT: OMG!!!, after reading more about 1.80. There was further info that more ps2 titles had been added to the backwards compatibility. Could find any other details about which games. So I tried Tourist Trophy and found that it now seems to work perfectly, and looks very nice 2. Im well chuffed :D

Personally - i think this was a good move on Sony's part to not place the ps2 chipset in the PAL console. There were problems with playing some ps2 games on the NSTC one anyhow...so an emulation is the better option as it made for a ps3 to play the game not the other way around.
Yep the games now look great....everyone who has never played Devil May Cry 3 should pick up a new or used copy - both dirt cheap and play that in 1080i - who needs No4.
But if you have Rez - just pop that in...you couldn't play that at launch but update 1.70 allowed it...1.80 made it even better...but you do miss the rumble

Pro Evo and MGS 3 still have performance issues with slow down. Games upscaled to 1080i have interlacing/scan lines on fast moving objects, 720p cures that but it's a shame about the performance issues.
VF4 worked ok before the update haven't tried it again yet....they're the only PS2 games I have right now.

Damn got rid of all my PS2 games....ive only got Bratz:Rock Angelz left.....errr, sorry my daughter has......cant see that benifitng much ;-)
I wonder if the pc connectivity is the same as some of the third party solutions around , wheras you have to set up web serving services on your pc , then you access an internal network web page to access the files ? Thats a bit cack really if it is.....i want a Media centra type interface that plays all formats ! I wont hold my breath though
