Whining noise

Hi all,

Does anyone else get a whining noise from their PS3?

I thought it was from the console itself, but I have discovered that it is actually coming through my 5.1 system (via optical cable). Even when idle. Games drown it out, but it is headache inducing when not in a game.

I can rule out a bad cable or a bad sound system as I have used the cable before and have had no problems with other optical sound inputs through the sound system.

Weird. Never heard of that. What happens if you try going through something besides optical?

I occasionally use the HDMI sound when listening through headphones.

No high pitched whine through that.

I did read about a similar problem that some people have had.. but that is a noise very similar to this that the console itself emits. My problem is just with the whine through the speakers.

my friends did this, so he just bought a new optical cable and it stopped.

Thanks... PlayStation Network wouldn't let me use any combination of Rimmer lol.

I tried the Monster optical cable I use for my X360, but I still get the whine.
