This is a step by step explanation of how to install Fedora Core into your PS3 read everything carefully before installing it on your PS3

Things we need:
-PC with Internet
-Playstation3
-DVD to burn Fedora on it.
-DVD or CD to burn PS3 Addon on it
-Flashdrive or USB Stick to put the Other OS onto it.
-Keyboard and mouse both are necessairly.

Downloads

All the things you need are here:

Fedora Core 5 DVD

or

PS3 add-on CD

Download Link:

ftp://ftp.uk.linux.org/pub/linux/Son...1110-ADDON.iso (ftp://ftp.uk.linux.org/pub/linux/Sony-PS3/CELL-Linux-CL_20061110-ADDON.iso)

Other OS Installer

Download Link:

http://www.playstation.com/ps3-openp...a/otheros.self (http://www.playstation.com/ps3-openplatform/data/otheros.self)

Burn Program

http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/U..._Download.html (http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Utilities/Backup_and_Copy_Utilities/UltraISO_Download.html)

Oke keep in mind that Fedora Core 5 will take 3.5GB space amount on your CD/DVD.
The addon CD will take up:50MB space amount.
The Other OS is just a tiny thing it wont take much space.

Lets start dowloading the Fedora into your PC that will take much time so do something usefull in the meanwhile read a book or something instead of playing on your PS3.

After the Download you have to burn it into the DVD/CD dont forget you must Burn from a image .ISO You can download this its free if you dont have a proper program or a program that cant burn .ISO

http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/U..._Download.html (http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Utilities/Backup_and_Copy_Utilities/UltraISO_Download.html)

Now Dowload the PS3 addon and burn it too you can burn this on a normal CD as it will not take much space like Fedora Core 5.

Lets move to the Flasdrive or USB stick weve got.
Make a map called: PS3 make into this PS3 map another map called otheros now put your PS3 AddonCD back into your PC open the file calledkboot you will see a file called otheros.bld copy and paste this into your otheros map wich is in the USB stick. Now we can move to the Other OS wich you had dowloaded choose otheros.self and place this also into the otheros map next to the otheros.bld now you have both of them in the otheros map and their all in the PS3 map.

It have to look like this.
http://img111.imageshack.us/img111/8471/ps3rj9.png

Oke now lets make our PS3 redy for the installation its good if you can make a backup of the files you have because everything will dissapear gamesaves, music, movies, gamedownloads and Folding@home but not your friendlists and your account that will stay.
For making a backup go to Game --> Saved Data Utility.
I didnt made a backup so my downloads and musics are all gone but it doesnt matter i didnt had much saves.

Now we can begin with the formatting.

Settings --> System Settings --> Format Utility --> Format Hard Disk --> Use All for the PS3 System --> Quick Format and your ready.

Now plug the USB Stick/Flashdrive into the PS3.

Settings --> System Settings --> Install Other OS. if it is good it will detect automatically the files on the USB Stick/Flasdrive read the instructions and instal the bootloader now go to Settings --> System Settings --> Default System and change your PS3 to Other OS
If you reboot your PS3 after that you will see the enviroment of Linux.

Now reboot your PS3 again but you dont have to do it if you already see the kboot prompt
type this with your keyboard: install-fc sda
It will ask you to put the Fedora CD in the machine now put it and type y you can choose between a Full and Minimal installation ive choosed for the Full one. Why not choosing Full if you already have downloaded it.

Now it will take ages to install dont panic by thinking the PS3 has frozen just wait if it freezes for a very long time then hold the PS button wich is on the Sixaxis

After a very long time wich took approximately 2 hours for me the PS3 will eject the Fedora Core 5 CD and ask you to put the PS3 AddonCD then again type y after inserted the CD. This will be quick and it will come out like the Fedora CD.

Now it wil ask you for a password press enter for two times and type reboot and press enter. After the boot you will see this localhost login: you will be confrontated with it many times but its easy you only have to type root now you will see a command prompt like this [root@localhost ~] #
this also will come alot so write these commands on a piece of paper.

reboot - reboots the system
halt - turns the PS3 off
startx - takes you into the graphical GNOME interface for Fedora 5
boot-game-os - takes you back into the main Playstation 3 OS

(If you want to choose Linux when your in the PS3 menu then follow this Settings --> System Settings --> Default System and change from PS3 to Other OS.)

Warning for HDTV

Before entering user interface though, if you are on an HDTV you may wish to change the resolution from the default 576x384. This cannot be done from within the GUI, so now is the time to experiment with it. From the command prompt enter:

ps3videomode -v 3 -f

The number '3' above corresponds to a 720p resolution, so you will want to enter a different number in that spot to achieve a different resolution. The resolutions are associated as follows:

1:480i 2:480p 3:720p 4:1080i and 5:1080p for NTSC territories

6:576i 7:576p 8:720p 9:1080i and 10:1080p for PAL territories

(NOTE: If your HDTV suffers from overscan, thus cropping off the edges of the screen as our older test set does, leave the -f off of your command, which stands for 'full screen' mode. For example, our best resolution is achieved by typing only: ps3videomode -v 4)

Now that you've set the resolution that works best for you, enter startx into the command prompt and hit enter. Thanks to FedoraTK for this info

Oke were almost there. you still see this icon after youve done the other things [root@localhost ~] # now type there like in the commands startx and Volia were there finally. One problem to resolve were not able to go on the internet so we still have to do some things now go to Applications --> Accessories --> Terminal

Now be carefull type it all like here:
Remember Linux is case-sensitive

su -c '/sbin/chkconfig --level 345 NetworkManager on'

- Pess Enter

su -c '/sbin/chkconfig --level 345 NetworkManagerDispatcher on'

- Press Enter

su -c '/sbin/service NetworkManager start ; /sbin/service NetworkManagerDispatcher start'

- Press Enter

restart the system type: reboot ignore the kboot prompt (or hit enter), login at the login prompt by entering 'root,' set your resolution at the command prompt, and enter startx to get back into or beloved Fedora Core 5

And thank God were finally there we were there before but now were finished with everything and dont have to do anything else anymore just joining and taking full advantages of our Fedora Core 5.

How is it extremely hard? its seems simple from what I've read. Its as simple as he could have put it. The guy spent a good while typing this up, it isn't easy to do a tutorial you know so give him some credit.

Whats oxford got to do with it? basic english is good enough. Would you rather you have to consult a thesaurus every other word then?

Well i find it quite easy to be honest... as i have a ps3 - but there we go again...its whats making this site so ---- - people posting on stuff when they havent go a clue therefore should'nt be making comments on it

I'm not trying to say his work isn't good. You're right, I don't own a PS3 therefore wouldn't quite get a lot of it, but I personally don't understand the way he uses English.

To me, from his writing, he sounds foreign. That's not to say he's produced a shoddy piece of work or anything.

As for people posting stuff when they haven't got a clue, unlike a few people I don't click "New Posts" and reply to everything I find. I'll read the thread, see if I have any relevant input and then decide to reply. Many of times I've started a reply and closed it because it's irrelevant. And now, I'm sure to be told that all of the above is irrelevant (which it is), but I had to have my say.

Yep i agree i think this lad does use text(ish) language -but come on you didnt have to make a comment on it did you? i carnt be arsed to disagree nor am i saying its you in general that are ruining the ps3 threads -its just every ----in time someone posts something ps3 related on here its slammed. I no longer post in 360monster - as i dont have a 360 but can buy one now if i wished. PS3 monster isnt really going to take off on a 360 based site i understand - hence why i dropped my modship - carnt be arsed to spend hours on here now when theres no point! and i know you normally dont do rubbish posts as you are a sensible one.

Thanks lens. It's good to see things can actually turn into a decent conversation instead of arguing.

I agree. I shouldn't have posted in here. I could say some silly excuse like, "I didn't realise it was the PS3 section" :) But I know your not stupid.

Well, I'll take my leave and let you fanboys do what you do best.

Adios.

360 PWNS ALLL! hehe

Oi less of the fanboy towards me, direct it at L11 though by all means ;).

I think that the person who wrote the tutorial is in fact turkish thats why it is basic english. I wasn't having a go at you just saying that I think the english in the tutorial does the job in the simplest way possible. I mean I could edit it but then whats the point in him writing it.

You shouldn't install Fedora on your PS3, get Ubuntu.

Well, seems like the top dog when it comes to Linux distros is Ubuntu, so I would check that one out.
