Well i got a PS3 today (waves goodbye to the 360) and tried to get it online, but i wasent suprised (always get these problems) for it not to work. Basicly i got to set up network stuff and it just said failed try again, then i go to test connection and its the ip address that fails (which is exactly what happened on my 360, although i fixed that by entering my mac os address or something, by typing in ip/config or something like that) Does anyone have any suggestions on getting it working, would like to get some demos and stuff.

MY isp is NTL and im trying to connect the same way i did with my 360 which was fine after a while, and thats plugging an ethernet cable from the back of my PS3 to the back of my ntl modem (dont have a router, maybe i should get one.

thanks.

On your Pc go to DOS Prompt and ebter ipconfig/all..........make a note of the settings (MAC address, IP, DNS, etc.) then manually enter those in to your PS3's network settings.

So as far as the NTL modem is concerned it's the same device connecting to it.

thanks very much, done all that by entering it manually, ip addrss now succeeds, but now its the next one that fails, with this error code: 80710102, and i no thats something to do with routers but im not using a router:'(

What are you using then? - im on wireless with my ps3 - took me all of a minute to set up so im not an expert on wired communications so why dont you refer to the setup guide given with the ps3 or visit the playstation website?....there is also a thread on here if you search!

Are you sure you dont need a router then? I would pressume you do as in the network settings diagram it connects to a router and/or modem router. What model is your modem and does it have a bulit in router. Say for instance im on Orange and i have the Livebox which is a modem/router (Hub). If i wanted a wired its a simple case of running the ethernet cable from the ps3 into that - bingo!..but wireless its just a case of tunning off my wpa key for a few seconds for it to pick up. Seriously both ways to connect are a doodle as you can automatic it all. I would personally check up on your modem as that is the problem

im pretty sure my modem is fine, ive asked on the PS3 officail forums and they said its fine and theres even a tutorial on there for connecting just with my type of modem but still i cant get it to pass the 'internet connection' but in the test connection, ill try resseting my modem and trying again.

Hi there. A few years ago I had this problem when trying to connect the Xbox directly to my cable modem. I found this problem was caused by my service provider at the time (telewest blueyonder). They told me that because the hardwares MAC adress was not registered (Xbox MAC adress), it would not be able to connect. They altered there system so that it would accept a extra MAC adress. And hey presto it all worked fine. And if I ever wanted to swap between the PC and the Xbox directly from the modem. I would always have to reset the modem (Unplug power source for a couple of minutes). Then connect whichever hardware I would want to use and power the modem back up.

I know blueyonder scrapped the MAC adress registration about 2 years ago. So now you can connect any type of hardware, provided you do a hard reset on the modem (power down). But I'm unsure wether this would be the case with NTL as I have never used them. Have you tried a hard reset?. If all else fails get in touch with you're service provider.
