The long-awaited UK launch of Sony's PlayStation 3 (PS3) games console has been marred by the cancellation of more than £10m worth of orders from retailers and consumers.
Retail industry sources claim the electronics giant has had as many as 20,000 pre-orders of the £425 console cancelled in the run-up to its delayed launch last Friday.
There have been none of the stock shortages typical of earlier console launches and the majority of the cancelled pre-orders are believed to have come from speculators hoping to sell the units on eBay for a profit.

Seems like I was right to say that the PS3's 'fastest selling console' was a hollow victory.

Yes it was delayed for various reasons...but it still sold well considering the 360 (what being a great machine and a huge list of AAA titles) and later the Wii was around. Could or have Sony being clever? in shipping 220K consoles to the UK alone - knowing fine well that they werent all going to sell all but 165K of them!...but at least it stops those ripping people off others on e-bay!

I'm not talking about the delay, lens. And eBaying consoles isn't a bad thing at all, certainly not to the point that Sony would plan around stopping that. Moreover, I highly, highly doubt Sony "knew full well" they'd only sell 165 thousand.

I agree with Blaze Lord they did alot of "Events" to show off the Console and alot of Publicity, I suspect that they were aiming for that Top Target, especially considering the amount of people who had a PS2.
So although they still did well, I do think or to a degree it shows that the Price along with other Issues seems to have put alot of people off.

Sony foofed up. Its the wrong time to launch a console and the price will have put lots of people off.

just before people look to far into it, like all of these cancelled pre-orders were from ebay scalpers and IMO I think thats a good thing they cancelled, means more consoles available on the market
means more consoles available on the market
Ebays is still the market. If there not on ebay they are on shops shelves not being sold.

well yes but at least they arent all on eBay being sold for over excessive prices!
basically the scalpers knew they couldnt make a steal so cancelled their pre-order
doesn't make me regret getting it personally!

That's never happened for ebay uk. In fact people are picking them up cheaper than retail.

I KNOW... I was simply SAYING the fact that so many scalpers have cancelled their pre-order is because they HAVENT been able to make a killing on ebay
and again I think thats a good thing, better than PS3's going for £500/600

It's a sorta-good-thing (though I agree with Tob3z that eBay is still the market, and I have never subscribed to the idea that eBay 'scalpers' are evil and whatnot), except it points out that demand for the console is in the ----ter. Which I'm sure software devs and publishers have taken note on.

Two guys in my office cancelled their pre-orders, because they were so available in the shops. One guy kept it, had it in yesterday, all boxed up to send out to someone.
if a company ships just a few units for release day we complain if it ships many we think its stupid, we'll never be happy.

I think that's a pretty over-simplistic take on what's going on here.

Your characterization of this.
I know it over-simplistic, I'm a simple guy.
