Spring Update (Now Available) Chat

Following on from the recent Games for Windows press release, it looks like MS is readying a firmware update to coincide with the release (8th May).

When asked about the May 8 launch of Games for Windows - Live paired with the spring Xbox 360 dashboard update, Greenberg would only say that Microsoft considers Games for Windows - Live a part of the update, and that Microsoft would have more information at a later date.

Hopefully we will get some new features as well this time instead of the usual security patches. I would love the 360 to be able to play Divx / Xvid.

Im with Bingo, it's time the 360 could play Xvid/DiVX formats - having recently spent 2 and a half hours converting a video from DiVX just to play it on Media Centre. Although that said, it would have been easier to just burn it to a DVD and play it through the "normal" route anyway I suppose lol. Thing is, im a bit of a "if there's a feature there...i wanna use it" kinda person - hence the faffing around converting formats, so come on MS....purlease :)

Multiple people voice chatting is a must, will MS ever do it? Who knows.

But a problem that I know a lot of people have, but is never voiced, is when you and your friend both send private chat requests to each other, then both end accepting and it wipes it out completely. In which case, you both then wait for the other member to send the invite and it's all ---- up basically. So, in other words. Link the chat up when an invite is both sent and recieved from one person to another. i.e Dcontrol sends me an invite, at the same time I've sent him one, instead of accepting his, we join chat automatically.

I'd also like custom seperate blade designs, this is very unlikely however, perhaps due to DIY themes that would be identicle as ones on the marketplace.

Yep that would be a good idea Fleebs about the private chat. It is annoying for us especially as we do private chat quite a bit. When it goes wrong we end up blaming the other person (as always its never my fault ;)).

Major Nelson stated in his podcast this week that the rumoured clan feature is a categoical NO...ITS NOT HAPPENING ....grrrr.

Cant really think of anything to add that hasnt been already.....I suppose that must be a good thing , as there isnt too much wrong. Maybe the marketplace could do with a tidy up , still find it really messy trying to find new content , having to keep going into different sections and seeing what is new. Maybe a new content ticker , or list on the fron blade to replace that useless great advert.

Oh and BlearKitten , if you are running Media Centre why arn't you using Transcode to stream all your Divx's etc ? I never convert anything , it will even stream ISO's straight to your 360.......

Apart from the divx/xvid support I'd like to see a more detailed user rep function. Well not really too detailed. Really just the addition of "----" to trash talk, unsporting etc. Would fit some of the people I have the misfortune to meet online perfectly.

Ok , in hindsight that may have glossed over the issues a bit. THe main one for me is the sheer complexity and muddledness (?) of it all. I still have to think twice where stuff is now , and certainly my wife and daughter are totally dumbfounded by it. Whereas in comparison , the PS3's XMB allows them to easily view photos and music , a much cleaner and easier to understand solution for the more casual users.
Its by no means perfect , but is miles less cluttered , which is probably my biggest complaint.

I do have casual gamer pals who still cant find stuff 16months after buying the thing.....

So yea maybe i didnt really think that statement through ;-)

Yea if you want to "debate" the benefits of each system that's better placed for another topic (don't be shy to start it), obviously you can state features from the PS3 that the Xbox 360 could do with adding.

However this is about the Spring Update so let's keep it to that, so any additions. Like someone said above the Clan Feature would be a really good idea I don't know why MS aren't jumping on. It will only further benefit the community as it will make it easier for Clans to Organise events and that's where I can see the Home Feature being handy in the PS3.

You could actually go into a make shift lobby in Home or someones apartment and discuss Clan Matches, Meetings, Tactics or any other stuff.

Sorry i wasnt try to add any debate here , i was trying to illustrate how a cleaner look would suit me and the family better. The only thing i had to compare that to was the XMB.
I was challenged that i thought the dash was ok , and just thought the reply that i felt it too cluttered needing qualifying. It was the only interface i have to compare it to .

The most confusing thing I can think of is there are two places to find Active Download. But I don't think redundancy, especially for something like that where you might want to check your progress in the middle of another activity, is confusing.

but you should be able to turn off The box that tells you whats out in stores, and what's new on the market place (most of the time it's a month old halo 3 trailer). personal choice. and the ads on here are a lot different, different size, shape (albeit still with 4 sides :p), and different place: top of the pace, never look at it. If you know just say, don't try and draw out something longer than it needs to be. Bar from actually removing the Ethernet cable from the Back of the Console, I don't know of anyway how you can Sign Out of your Xbox Live account and still stay signed into your Gamer Profile.

Yea but if you are constantly doing that then that will over time cause deteration of your Connectors on both the Cable and the Ethernet Port. I'm actually saying there should be a feature included, it would be extremely simple, where by you could sign out of Xbox Live.

Also some people don't have as easy acccess to the back of their Xbox 360 as you might, it's a bit of an unnecceasry annoyance.

You are saying that Microsoft should add this feature because you can "simply" unplug it yourself, the point I'm making is you shouldn't have to. It's a very simple feature, that is on nearly every community based site/application that you use.

Moreover, you're over-thinking the stress of the Ethernet cables. The plastic clip breaks off wayyyyyyyy before there's any damage to the actual contacts, and the cable is still quite useable when the clip breaks off.

Example: I have buy uno. Play it for a month. Friend want's uno. I tell him to give me 300 points for it. I get 300 points and he get's uno. That's 2 people who now own the game yet MS only get 400.

However them launching this instead of getting the Government involved would show that they are open to the whole DRM question.

I've been wanting this for ages...when I'm using the torrents being connected to Xbl isn't good and it's a real pain in the ass to get the ethernet cable in/out of the back of my 360 because of where it is in my cabinet.

They have a 'connect to XBL' button, all we need is a 'disconnect' button too.

To be honest, I'm not sure how being connected to XBL, and not doing anything with it (chat, mp, etc), could hurt your torrents. I wouldn't be surprised if that was all placebo.

It doesn't hurt the torrents...but as the net connection is being maxed it slows the 360 Dashboard down and if you get pops when people come online etc. they takes ages to fully appear and disappear.

Its a signature saying about the release of an album as far as I can tell. No link to any site so its not classed as advertising (by me at least). If that was the case I wouldn't be allowed to have my gamercard sig as I'm advertising all the games I've played recently. I'm not touchy about these sorts of things (just the ones which blatantly break the forum rules), I was the one who edited his sig for him remember :p.

Anyway back on topic......

I for one will be looking forward to this update and its probably the most significant update being released to date. Especially looking forward to WLM being integrated.

Just looking at the Gamerscore Blog and another thing that the Spring Update is going to fix *cough* DESTROY *cough* is the ability to download content from other regions.

So basically your US Live Accounts you may have will no longer be able to download content from the US (if you are in the UK). However any content you have downloaded in the Past will still work fine.

Also worth pointing out that any content that you have downloaded but deleted due to restrictions in Hard Drive Space, you will not be able to re-download that.

This is some what of a pickle for people inparticular you paid for content on Video Marketplace such as TV Episodes and took MS's advice to delete and download more.

So yea there goes that gold mine.

This applies to all countries, so UK Content can only be downloaded by UK Customers, French content by French Customers, etc. So for instance if you live in Germany any Xbox Live Arcade Games that are restricted from Sale there you can no longer download them from neighbouring countries.

I know I ranted on a bit but I'm just trying to make it as clear as possible :p

All depends on your Internet Connection and the Hosting Servers themselves, so what could take me 2 minutes might take you 10 minutes.

As a rule they never take long so just turn it on acept the update and grab a cup of tea. Back upstairs jobs a good 'un.

Messenger Integration: This will let you see all the contacts on your Messenger Friends List on your Xbox 360 (and vice versa) and send them messages from your Xbox. All the usual 'appear offline' etc options will also be included, so you can keep a low profile if you just want to get on with some uninterupted gaming.

I like to reboot my Router once a week, that way it seems to keep its max speed.

I just hope with the region lockout now in place that the UK gets its own VideoMarketplace sooner rather than later.

But unless you have a few HDD's or the 120GB one there is no point currently as they take up a fair bit of memory so you'd need a lot of GB. I can't see them adding it now but it will be scheduled in for the future along with that other tv thingy they were on about (I can't remember for the life of me what its called).

It's limited to 6 Separate Convos at one time, not sure if you cam have a Multi-Chat situation

I don't think there is any grouping, the only groups are MSN Contacts and Xbox Live Contacts and you can toogle between them

Well I was under the impression that the Update was scheduled for the Week of the 7th not the 7th itself.

Not sure where I heard that and also where I got the impression it would be at 12 am /pm GMT (11 BST) but that's my thoughts anyway.

If they sent a power supply...you may well get the brick and teh lead you need...so you'll be sound.

As for the lead, IIRC I'm sure it's just a standard IEC 3pin (Kettle) lead...so just nab one off your PC or something. DO check it first though.

I just heard from the Dashboard team that we'll have to wait at least another day for the Dashboard update to be released. The update is not being released in the next 24-hours. That is all I know at this time, but I’ll get more information tomorrow afternoon (PT) and I will update this post as needed. Thanks for your patience and understanding.

Edit: As has been pointed out by some community members, the official press release does say the ‘week of May 7th’ for a release time. So we’re well within that so far. It sounds like some folks missed that part, so that’s why I wanted to post this update.

yeah bigman he said that it was becaus ehe isnt 18, but i said that there might be a family setting for it and he immediately said NO but he gets grumpy very easily, and doesnt like trying stuff out! he did originally have the family settings like "cant play 18 rated games" but got that all sorted, is there new settings for him to edit so he can use MSN?

They arrows indicate if that player is in a game session with an open slot, saving you clicking everyones name until u find someone who is joinable.

Robsta ive been having the exact same problem with my liv messenger i dont know what to do about it and Uriel the arrows are to show you if the game that the person is in is joinable. which i think is a nice touch :D

Ok think i found a fix to this, in theory i think this will work. I haven't been able to check this on my console.

It does become a tad annoying if you are halfway through something and you keep getting random messages of no importance popping up all the time. You always have the option to sign out and be left in peace.
