Codemasters is planning to launch Colin McRae: DIRT simultaneously on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC in June, the publisher told Eurogamer this morning.

"At the moment the guys in the studio are working towards June, more likely to be the end of June I'd imagine," said a Codemasters spokesperson.

"As far as we're concerned internally, everything's on track."

It will be the first next-gen rally outing for the publisher, who is eager to impress us with heaps of sparkly high-definition mud.

The game will have the usual boot-full of point-to-point races and plenty of off-road excursions, as well as new Rally Cross events. You'll be able to hop behind the wheels of 2WD, 4WD, Classic and RWD vehicles, drive carelessly, and make a right old mess.

DIRT's got a flashy new damage engine too, multiplayer support and European, International and Global rally championships. It's enough to get our engines purring.

More very shiny screenshots (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=66134)

I don't like racing games and particularly not rally ones, but there is just something about the Colin McRae series. I remember playing '04, trying to beat the ridiculously good times on the leaderboards (just to realise time and time again that I was infact nowhere close) and then '05 and racing against friends on Xbl. There is this beautiful, yet so difficult to race track on one of the Japan levels. It has everything, uneven/wet surfaces and various corners.

The screenshots for the new one look very, very good and if the gameplay is essentially similar I might just have to pick it up.

What about you?

Heh, I'd say you probably picked the LEAST realistic looking screenshot to introduce us to the topic. :p

Yeah, looks quite good. I'm not sure about any more racing games, though, because I'm still playing through PGR3, which I think will probably satisfy me even until PGR4. :D

Yeah, the others would've involved resizing and I really couldn't be bothered.

And my theory is that people are more likely to read a post if there is an image (any image) involved. ;)

I doubt it, not my kind of game but then again nor was PGR3 and I've enjoyed that. So I suppose I'll have to wait and see as it gets closer to the release date.

This looks quite spiffy. Never been a huge fan of the McCrae franchise but this might be the one to rectify that.

The game does look rather awesome even though I'd never touch it. Controlling cars in the PS2 and Xb versions was just too realistic for me and thus, I was pants.

I like racing games in general but Colin McRae has always been too realistic for me. I'm more of an arcadey racing type person...fellow. Give me Burnout any day.

Haven't played a game like this for Years, defiantly picking this up when it hits the selves.

Anybody played it with the Wheel yet ?

Nope, not yet.

I haven't really got it set up to play games with the Wheel, so it's kind of being neglected at the moment.

Its good, still trying to get used to the handling in the carts. The wheel has had an official price cut according to MajorNelson (http://www.majornelson.com/archive/2007/05/25/wireless-wheel-price-drop.aspx). Dont know if its USA only at present though.

Yeah, its pretty darn good, but I had to restart my race, apparently I had "Terminal Damage" Pfft, whatever.

Funnily enough, it wasnt the engine, or drive shaft that meant I couldn't go on, it was the wheels. So everything can be at 0% apart from the wheels and you can still drive :brow: Hmmm, riiiiiiiiight.

Finally dowloaded the demo yesterday it is by far the best rally game i have ever played even though it is not the full representation of the final game it was amazing, the gameplay was just spot on and the graphics were very good. I will be getting Forza but Dirt is better.

Damn. I thought Forza was great. I had no idea DiRT could be this much better. I've never played a rally title, but this is just amazing.

I'll still be getting Forza in 3 days, but DiRT's definitely going to be in my collection in a month and a half.

I've played the demo and thought it was quite good actually and I'm not a big fan of driving games (I have played previous Colin McRae titles though). The damage factor is a nice inclusion and I went of the edge of the track in my Lancer Evolution (I think it was) straight into a rock and you could see visual damage to the front of the car. Raced with those buggies too and came 3rd on my first go (took me a while to stop spinning and crashing into other vehicles). Possibly a purchase or rental for me at the moment.

Truplaya83
27/May/07, 01:07 PM
For me the demos of Forza and DiRT decided which to get,

DiRT all the way. So much more fun to play than Forza. Sorry to Forza fans but throwing my car around a desert track is much better than having to get "the perfect braking line" on some non-descript track in Germany.

Colin Mccrae beats forza on gameplay, graphics and fun so i suppose ill be buying DiRT not Forza. Im just glad i got demos to help out. I might have bought boring old Forza

Well i thought Dirt was great, really entertaining and graphically stunning(Y) but whats with the American commentator (N) I thought McRae was scottish. That commentator spoils it for me way way to cheesy(N) (N)

I am absolutely heads over heels in love with this game. I played the Demo...finally a game that can stand up to Gears graphically right? I don't know why the H3 Beta is getting more press than this..it ----ing blows it away.

I'm pretty sure that has to do with the difficulty level. The highest it lets you go in the demo is Amateur which has "moderate" mechanical damage. I would bet on Pro Am or Pro, it'd be easier to terminally damage your car.

Because it's Halo and it will make millions of $(unlike Dirt).

Well Halo 3 is the end of a trilogy that brought success to Xbox with Halo CE then brought Success to Xbox Live with Halo 2, and up until a few months ago was still the most played game over Xbox Live Servers.

Also the fact that the Halo 3 Beta has an Online Multiplayer where by 12 People can join, which offers differing replayability. Unlike DiRT which consists of 3 tracks and 3 cars and you can only play by yourself.

That's my guess anyway, plus the short time frame imposed on Halo 3 means that people will want to get the most out of it before it ends. Where as in DiRT I could pick it up a month or two months time and give it a spin.

It shouldn't matter what difficulty its at, if your engine is ----, it should be ----ed, and the fact that it was everything bar 3 things that car should not be running still.

Just been trying out the PC version of this. With GFX up high at 1024 x 768 (which should match the 360 output), it crawls. I have a high end PC and a great GFX card so should be able to run this smoothly. I was lucky to get 15-20fps which is no use for gaming.

It does looks great though.

I think I will stick to the 360 version as it was smooth :D

Anyone know if the racing wheel will work with this game?

I'm seriously considering buying it, and I know it works with both Forza and PGR which is enough for me to justify buying it, but DiRT would make it even more worth the $130

I downloaded and played this demo today... nothing too special, other than visually.

Gran Turismo 3's rally sections felt much better control-wise.

As I said in the thread for our Forza and DiRT team, Gamespot's gone hands-on with the multiplayer of this game, and it won't be directly competitive racing. 8 people will be able to go into a lobby, then everyone goes on the track at the same time but can't see each other, and the times are compared at the end. So it's sort of like Online Time Trials against other people.

Really disappointing. I'll stilll be getting it for the Single Player, but they could've added an online mode where you race together, and then have a seperate mode for this.
