Apologies if this has been asked a million times already but can I get peoples opinions about storing the 360 horizontal or vertical?
The manual states you can do both yet I have seen stories of people who store it vertically only for the 360 to mess up and break.
I realise its best to store it horizontally and you should keep it aired etc.. etc..but what is the latest on storing it vertically..i do..and have had no problems yet....if it breaks how do i prove it was this that caused it..and then..would I be entitled to sue them or get a new 360 or something..?
Any advice or opinion greatly received !

Well speaking from having many faulty 360's that were always horizontal - i decided this time to keep it vertical and guess what never had a crash (other than game fault).
Depends on personal taste i dont mind either way though if vertical just make sure you/or anyone carn't knock it over

Exact opposite for me!
I just keep it at a 045 degrees to be safe.

I've it both Horizontial and Vertical depending on my ever evolving setup and it hasn't caused problems either way.

I keep mine vertical as i have nowhere to store it underneath my TV so upright beside it takes up less room.
I dont believe there should be any problems with it, but i do believe that you shouldnt move your 360 from a vertical position to a horizontal position (or vise versa) whilst the console is turned on with a game in the drive as it could result in the disc scratching.

i got mine from amazon, and i t had a note with it saying to keep it vertical at all times, and always on a hard surface, not direct on carpet.

No problems with mine so far. I keep it horizontal on a TV stand. The base (of the TV stand :) ) is made of slats of wood so it should get plenty of ventilation
I keep mine horizontal, I dont like the look of the 360 towering up, its kinda un-stable. Dont want to knock it over...lol :)

Either way depending on your setup I'd say. Currently mine is horizontal but it has been vertical in the past and posed no problems either. Just remember not to move it with a game inside to avoid scratching the disc.
Yea, but you only have to knock the thing a bit and it will start to toppel(sp?) over. It already happend to me once, destroyed my COD2 disc :( lol
MS should releases a stand like Sony did for the PS2.

I keep mine horizontal, but the console is designed to work both ways.
Although, you do block the bottom vent if you have it standing up.

I dont know what you mean lol ???
Anyways.. I always had my vertical with no problems.. The for christmas I got a new TV so it went horizontal on the stand..
Then in the last month or so it's been freezing, then last night I got the dreaded flashing red ring of doom.. And the xbox was completely f**ked.
I took the harddrive off and took the console back to Currys and they replaced it straight away... So I've got a nice shiney new one now! Also, they forgot to take the hard drive off the replacement console.. So I've got a spare 20GB HD to sell now!
I'm gonna have to keep it vertical again now.. But it will look a bit rubbish with an empty TV stand with my xbox standing next to it!

I seriously don't get how discs get scratched on horizontal, surely it makes more sense for it to happen at vertical, still mine has always been horizontal and my discs are in perfect condition and it's forzen something like twice on Oblivion and that's it, not bad in a year.
Saying that it's not been raped or anything maybe if I started playing it alot more I would notice this.

Always had it Horizontal, When I had the PS2 it was both depending on the setup. But the 360 is always horizontal.

Dont quite understand why, but the one and only time my 360 has ever scratched a disc was when I briefly had it horizontal- defies logic I know, but now it stays vertical to be safe(ish)

HI there I store mine horizontal as I found having it vertical scratched my games :(
Well from reading this topic.. It looks like the final answer is that it doesnt matter if it's vertical or horizontal.. It's down to luck if your 360 f*cks up or not!
just red on the xbox.com forum, this guy took his 9 month old 360 back to GAME after 3 red lights and got a brand new.
Then he was told to keep it on the horizontal because of vibration causing the laser reader to go to hell.
My experience says that the 360 crashes more when standing.

I've had my 360 standing for ages. I've had no problems.
Sometimes my 360 will only play certain games Vertically and certain games horizontally.

horizontal as i was told that if you run it vertically it sratches your cd's

Vertical with plenty of space around it for air to circulate it. Problems seem to be pretty sporradic so I wouldn't worry about what to do with your console.

Been running it horizontally for a week now and can offer decent comparison
basically, its quieter, hasn't crashed once, the tray ejects more naturally and no extreme whirring sounds from games.
i recommend horizontal!

the best cheap stand u can invest in is blu tack lol
I had mine vertically at first but found it a lot quieter horizontal. I have it right next to where I sit, on the left. So with it vertical I have to reach around the tray to put discs in which is also a pain.
Horizontal is better in almost every case.
1. Horizontal allows for the bottom ventilation panel to be exposed.
2. If you have a metal or glass stand to put your 360 on, more of the 360's surface area will be in contact with this and increase heat transfer away from your console.
3. It has been documented before how horizontal disc drives are more reliable and substantial than vertical ones as gravity aids with keeping the disc in position at all times (among other reasons).
4. Horizontal often means less chance of there being an accident such as knocking the cosole over which has been proven to break discs.
I will say that if your console is on carpet, i would suggest keeping it vertical, as horizontal on carpet will almost certainly make you're 360 overheat.

Yeah i'd like to know that. Mines in a wooden cube thing and i turned it horizontal this morning. had a go on SCDA and didn't really notice a difference

Yeah, I hang around here from time to time.
Oh and made the move to horizontal, really no comparison now. Quieter and smoother loading.

successfully concluded that my setup will not compromise to that it will fit horizontally. I am not sure as to how much actualy difference it makes. Is it that substantial or barely noticable?
