Now i have my network up and running, only missing the laptop in the list(dont find the settings for wireless?)
The settings on the 360 were ok but it can get tricky, but it depends on your router.
Mine sucks thats why i had some problems and i still have with the laptop.

does anybody bought the Wireless Adapter?

Its expense like $100, I don't need it because my PC is right next to my 360. but it might help because there are wires everywere and it looks like a mess. So I might get one but it won't be in while because I don't have the cash.

I knew i was going to buy it because the fireplace is between the moden and my pc and so i can not have cables behind it. So I pre-order it last september. I got it with $25 off.

If your wireless network is 802.11a, 802.11b or 802.11g it will work.

They are the bands in which your Router will run on, what model is your router?

I don't see any reason why not as your router "should" support atleast 1 of those bands.

I've been thinking about getting the wireless adapter. My 360 is beside my PC, but when I plug the ethernet cable straight into the PC, it can't find an IP address when i'm setting up the network. Would the wirless adapter make a difference?

Nope, infact, it would probably complicate the situation a lot more. Plus there waaaaay to expensive...you should just try and sort the problem out with the IP. :)

Okay, cheers bud. Trying everything under the sun just now, but still nothings working. Might have to buy a giant ethernet cable and connect it all the way up to the top of the house where the actual router is. Will probably have to be about 80ft long, but there we go.

Ring up the customer support, they're very helpful.

Im not sure where you're from so don't know which number to give you so look in back of instructions for the number. ;) (Y)

I'm from the UK but I have a US machine. I'm hoping that's not what the problem is, i'll be gutted if I can't go online with it.

Hmm, don't like to break it to you, but that could well be the problem. :s

You might wanna check the ethernet cable you're using..there's 2 types..standard (wired point to point) and then cross-over....try both types as modems/PC LAN cards can vary.

Running a direct ethernet cable would be ok if you had to do it though..I'm running a 20m (60ft) cable from bottom to top of my house and it's sound.

Same MJ - I have one of those 20m cables, right down my stairs. :p

I've tried both standard and cross-over, neither work. About 6 months ago, I had my PS2 wired up to the web through my PC, then my dad changed the network in the house, so i'm guessing that has something to do with it.

He was saying that the only thing the American console might stop me doing is going on x-box live, but he said I should still be able to connect to the network at very least.

Next thing to do then is direct ethernet just to make sure you can get on Live that way...at least then you'll know it due to your network settings and you can go from there.

Mez, if I understand correctly, your PC has a wireless connection to your LAN, and you connect your console to the PC in order to use that as way to access the LAN? Or you have two ethernet ports on your PC?

Either way, it sounds like your dad changed the Advertisement Time To Live, a UPnP setting, which determines the number of hops a UPnP packet is set. If he lowered it, its possible that the 360 isn't being reached or updated correctly. This would make sense if he didn't know there was a device that couldn't directly get a signal to the router. Ask him to raise it again.

Yeah, that's the set up I have but I still can't get it working. My dad did a hard boot on the router so the settings should be the same as when I had my PS2 working online. However, x-box still isn't connecting to the network and it's persistent that I have an IP problem.

I'll talk to my dad about the UPnP thing, cheers.

if your having trouble with your router and xbox live go to port forwarding in your router set up create a new application and open these ports:
UDP-88
TCP/UCP-3074
your NAT should say strict but it will till connect to games

With the router mabobbys - you have do something with the DNS - or I did anyway. :s

How did you do it cos mines keeps failing(THE DNS TEST):(

WACCOE

Go to your router settings - then 1 of the options is Enable DNS (or something like that, im not too good on these things).

Would explain more in-depth but i've got training now. :)

Mez, it's also possible that -your- computer has some sort of firewall on it, and is blocking the traffic from going to the 360.

Strachan, that answer's going to be pretty hard to answer without knowing more details about your setup.

Decided to go out and buy the wireless adapter, plugged it in and boom john, online.

Glad to hear. The UPnP settings didn't work out?

Mez
27/Feb/06, 01:05 AM
I don't think the UPnP settings had been affected. I still have absolutely no idea why it wasn't working, but there we go!

I appreciate your time though in trying to help!

No, they wouldn't have been affected. At least, not the settings I was thinking of.

Do you guys not keep your routers running DHCP?

If you'll just reset your router, put in your ISP's connection info, and leave DHCP on then you'd be fine, also make sure UPnP is enabled.

DHCP enables the router to give out IP addresses to everybody that asks for one, wired and wireless, it's a lot easier than assigning every device their own IP address, unless you want it that way, in which case you can configure that through the device.

Also, if you have a wireless router you'd have a better signal throughout the household if you put the router below the computers. The way the signal broadcasts, it goes horizontal to vertical, making an imaginary "dome" So if you have your wireless router above all the computers you're not getting the best signal quality.

I have the new Belkin Pre-N router, and it's awesome, but it also has a crazy broadcast distance... And it's a little pricey, but well worth it.

I'm not using the wireless card for my Xbox 360 because I have the router in my room (in the basement) but all the computers in the house have PCI cards in them, and it work's flawlessly.

One more thing, Microsoft's "Internet Connection Sharing" or ICS, makes for horrible lag because you have a lot of latency between the router, computer, xbox, computer, and router, so you'd have a lot more fun on Live, especially with the 360 games if you have a direct connection to your router. I noticed when I play my original Xbox games on Live over ICS they don't lag too much, but the 360 games are almost unplayable.
