Unless you have lead lined walls fella - u will get good coverage with a wireless setup...I can use my laptop in my garden with no drop of connection.

A router basically does what it says on the tin - it routes network traffic...as straight through traffic between two devices or by allowing multiple devices to be connected through it each sharing bandwidth...

Get a wireless modem/router combo or a modem with wireless adapter/bridge. Lots of different compatable "with Xbox LIVE" choices - I personally prefer Netgear kit... Then of course buy your Xbox 360 Wireless Adapter and plug and play. I am not totally Network savy but will of course look to help you if you require more information fella.

And yes I believe you do get one months free subscription with a Prem Pack...

The 12 Month Subscription packs that were on the old XBox also work. Much easier to setup an account now. The wireless connector seems to be fairly straight forward. As long as your wireless router it setup correctly, the 360 looks and does all the setup all in one go. I managed to setup wireless on a friends 360 and it was up and running in a few mins.

First question would be how do you connect to Broadband? Do you have a router or are you connecting via your PC. Most of the people that know IT and also XBox will be more than happy to help out. Just give us as much detail about your current setup as you can. :)

If you connect to the Net via a PC, what does the phoneline connect to? From the socket to the PC, do you have a modem that it plugs into?

well, since your basic modem connected, the first thing to check is if your PC has a network card connected to it. If it does, you can use that but this option tends to be the cheapest but not the best or easiest.

Second option would be to head down to your nearest computer shop/store and replace your normal DSL modem with a modem/router. Wired or wireless, choice is up to you. Netgear tend to be good and easy to setup. Since you mentioned wireless, then your modem/router will cost a little bit more because of the wireless functionality.

As long as your Wireless Modem supports A/B or G standard, then you should be ok. The wireless adaptor is pretty straight forward. It is more having your modem setup correctly for it to work. Wireless for the 360 just searches for any available connection and just automatically adds all the details etc. What type of modem is it? Is there a make/model?

I was looking into going wireless too. Can anyone recommend any good routers for the siad purpose. Currently using a BT Voyager 205 its ok but wireless is better so I'm told.

Ok. Sounds like this thread could use with some LAN expertice. Namely me.

Now the current set up that you have so far to my knowledge is that you have an ADSL modem (given the fact that it's connected to a phone line), which connects to your computer directly. Now I need to know some things in order to help you set up your wireless network.

1. Does your modem connect to your computer via USB cable, or an ethernet (network) cable?
2. If you're connected via USB cable, does your modem have an ethernet port at the back as well as the USB port?
3. If you're connected via USB cable, does your computer have an ethernet port in the back?

In case you can't recognise an ethernet port, it looks just like a normal phone-line port, only it's a little wider and has more pins on the end.

I will now briefly explain how to set up a wireless network given the scenario in my questions.

1. If you connect via USB and there is no ethernet port in the back of your modem, you will need to get a new modem. When you buy the new modem, make sure that it has more than 1 ethernet port in the back. This will ensure that you can use a shared internet connection. If possible, get a modem that's wireless enabled (should have antennae on it). With this new modem, you should be able to have it connected to your computer, and if it's wireless it will connect to your 360 too (or you can run an ethernet cable from your modem to your xbox).

2. If your modem does have an ethernet port in the back, but only 1 port, then you will need to purchase a router. A router is basically a device that lets you split an internet connection. That's just the simple explaination. Anyway, this router should connect to your modem via a single ethernet cable, the router will also have extra ethernet ports at the back so you can connect to your PC and 360. If possible, get a router that is Wireless enabled (look for antennae). If the router is not wireless you will also need to purchase a Wireless Access Point, which basically turns an ethernet cable into wireless transmissions. The AP should plug directly into your router via a single Ethernet cable.

3. If your modem connects to your computer via USB, and your computer also has an ethernet port at the back, then all you need to do is purchase a Wireless Access Point (mentioned above), and connect it via an ethernet cable to your computer. Then you will need to go to your computer, open up your network connections, then select both your LAN connection and your USB-modem connection, right click, then select Bridge Connections. Your computer should do the rest.

That's pretty much the easiest way to set up a wireless network given your current set-up. If you want to get into the hard stuff like IP/MAC addresses and wireless encryptions just get ahold of me on MSN and I can explain everything to you through there. Same deal if you have any problems buying a Router/Access Point/Modem and setting them up etc.

I opted for the wired route even thow i have a bt voyager 2100 wireless router. £60 for the wireless card is a bit extreme when you can buy normal pc usb ones for £20ish. I just bought a rj45 20m cable(network cable) from ebuyer for a few quid and ran it round the skirting board from my switch. Sorted. And at a saving of £55 :D

I originally had the my Access Point in the study, and got a reasonable signal in my room, but it wasn't good enough. So I ran a 10m ethernet cable along the skirting boards from the study to my room, but the cable only made it to the top of the doorway, so I knocked a couple of nails in the wall and hung up the Access Point up in the corner of my room, now I got perferct reception in my room. I recently moved my mini-switch up next to the Access point to make preparations for my new PC which will be wired. I may just get a second NIC and bridge the connections so my xbox and/or 360 can be live instead of getting the Wireless 360 adapter. Save myself a few bucks.

Hehe i've got a much more crazy setup. My 2nd line is downstairs dinning room where my comp used to be but have moved it to my bedroom now. So basicaly wireless router is in dinning room which connects to my server pc then 35m rj45 to my room which connects into my switch, out of the switch there is wireless access point(for better connectivity like you have done for laptop) 1rj45 to xbox360 and another to my main pc. You may ask why? Well i preffer a 100mb connection to my server and also allot faster to xfer files from one comp to another.

On the 360wireless note. I don't think its worth it. I was origanoly going to go for it but money doesn't grow on trees in my life :(

I have one unused ethernet port. If I had the 360 in the same room as my PC would the Ethernet cable work for LIVE.

My set-up (when access point arrives) will be. Netgear DG834 Router/Modem connected to the phone socket downstairs. Netgear WG602 54G Access Point connected to the router via ethernet. Then my PC, laptop, Xbox 360 (if I ever get one :() and PSP all connected wirelessly.

Thats the router:

And thats the access point:

Although if you don't already have a router it would probably be better to buy this:

That's exactly right! Though you WILL need to go to your network settings and do the bridging...but that's very simple!

Once you get your access point, make sure you read the instructions BEFORE you plug it in and turn it on etc. Once your Access point is configured according to the manual, plug it into the unused ethernet port in the back of your computer, and then go to 'Control Panel'. Switch to Classic view, then double click on 'Network Connections'. Now you should see at least 2 network devices in the window: One for your LAN (local area network), and one for your USB modem. Make sure that they are both connected physically to your computer, and that they appear connected on the screen. Now all you have to do is higlight both icons, right click one of them, and select "Bridge Connections". Windows will do the rest. Now the only thing left for you to do now is to go to your 360, plug in the wireless adapter, and if it's as user friendly as I expect it to be, it should automatically detect a wireless network and connect itself accordingly.

There's one thing you should be careful of with a wireless network, and that's to be sure that it's secure. Read through the Access Point Instruction Manual under Ecryptions and/or Security and it'll explain to you how to make sure that only authorised devises can connect to your network.

My security is both MAC address filtered, as well as 128-bit encryption. Meaning that if I want to add another device to my wireless network, I need to manually enter the device's physical MAC address into the Access Point, then I need to enter a series of passwords into the new device so that it can decrypt the wireless signals and connect to the network. No one's stealing my internet!!

Heh...reminds me of the fiasco when I first got live for my xbox, spent about £100 quid for some crap wired router :| and it took alot of fiddling to get it working, I was completely new to BB and networking then (I still am :p).

Good luck with it, you've got some good advice to work with here :) Better than fumbling around in the dark like me :p
