Given Gears of Wars' success and its pedigree, downloadable content for the game isn't so much a question of if it will happen so much as it is when it will happen. Back in August, Epic Games vice president Mark Rein admitted that the studio was already planning downloadable content, but wouldn't go into specifics.

Epic has been very tight-lipped about what it has planned for the shooter on Xbox Live Marketplace, but now we know one fairly important detail--the content will be free.

Speaking with Spike TV after the network's Video Game Awards (where Gears won four awards), Epic Games president Mike Capps was asked about how the company was going to keep Gears a top-seller. He quickly replied, "We always take care of our customers, we always give them stuff for free, and we're going to keep doing that forever. That's how we do it, this is Epic."

He added that the content has been in development long before the game was released, but did not divulge a timetable of when it will be released.

That is quite awesome that a company who could make us pay a lot for more Gears is going to give it to us for free.. Bungie didn't even do that with Halo 2 for a few months.

That quote seems like he's holding himself to only some of the content being free.

Well free content is still free content. I'm hoping for more modes and map. Chances are that they'll introduce a new mode for free and include 2 maps and make you pay for the other 4 or whatever XD

Parts of it do, but the quotes like "we always give them this stuff for free" make it seem like he's talking about more then just this.

And in the past Epic has given all content for free, like in Unreal 2K4.

The real question is what does he mean by content, as downloadable content on Xbox Live referrs to all types...Demos, Picture Packs, Themes, In- Game Content such as Expansions, Missions, Maps, Guns, etc.

It really determines what he means by Content and as was pointed out the key word is some content will be free. So they might give you some crappy theme but the actual interesting stuff you will have to pay for.

Obviously I'll wait and see before bad mouthing them just don't get too excited before you see it for yourself (aka on XBL Marketplace)

new maps would be great, and maybe a game mode where you keep re-spawning, possibly territories based. We'll have to see.
