Cancelling A Gold XBL Account Without Losing It

Well, it's not as easy as the title suggests. My situation:

I've had and Xbl account for 2 years now and it's got the automatic renewal, as it was from the original Xbox.

I transferred said account when I bought my 360 May this year.

My card has now been charged with the renewl cost of £40 which is money I really, really don't have.

I've just spoken with 4 different people from MS customer support (about 20 mins each time, thank god it's an 0800 number) and I am a little unclear about what happens if I cancel the account. Basically I have been told this:

If I cancel the account now:

1) I will lose that account as of now and it will be gone forever with no way of retrieving it.
2) The account will turn silver and I can never get it back to Gold, even after purchasing a card, or else.
3) The account will turn silver and the only option to change it back to Gold will be by phoning up MS support.
4) The account will turn silver and I can just turn it back to Gold by selecting the option in the Dashboard.

That is the order I've been told the options with. I obviously prefer the last option, but I am not sure.

I don't want to lose my account and I want to be able to get a Gold account again soon.

Has anyone here cancelled an Xbl account that they've had from their original Xbox? If so, did you managed to keep that account?

Does anyone want to donate me £40? ;)

try the xbox forums, they are usully helpful, also i wouldnt do it till you know the anwser, they carnt delate your gamertag i dont think because you want to stop renewal payment, they certinly dont deleate acounts when peoples memberships run out, from gold and revert to silver so either they are talking bollox because they know nothing or they are talking bollox to make you think twice about it and keep paying either way its not on

Well, I want them to cancel the Gold account, change it to silver and refund me 11 months.

I just need to know if someone has done it before, because I don't want to do anything without knowing I can keep it.

I don't know how to get an 11 month refund but surely all you do is say to Microsoft reimburse me the money and then tell them that to change it to Silver and you'll pay via PrePaid Cards instead.

Don't tell them you want to "Cancel" your account as this will confuse people. Just say you didn't realise it was still taking money on your Credit Card, money you can't afford to be taken out of your bank. Also make it clear you wish to continue using Xbox Live that your only stopping due to Money Troubles or some crap like that.

try and get either the nglish or american call centres because if you get an Indian or Pakistani one they tend to be less helpful probberly be ok with your acent but mine is a no go they carnt understand a word

i have few trials too, but on another note. I had a friend who cancelled his xbox live account (on an old xbox mind) and got a rebate for the 5 months he had left. He said he no longer had broadband (which was true) so couldnt use it. They refunded him.

OK, my friend cancelled his account when he sold his 360. He bought a new one today (yey) and still has the old account as silver. This is the chance to try it and see if it would work, but I can't find the 48h trial that I had somewhere.

Is there anyone of you guys that offered me a trial that could give it to me asap? Please? I'll love you forever.

I have now phoned them 6 times in total today. I have been told that my account will be lost, will be Silver FOREVER, will be put on hold (without Silver) for 3 months and I can't even remember the others.

Basically my last call was with 4 different people and they managed to sort it out. Most of them don't know what they are talking about and therefore give wrong information. Don't get me wrong, every one of them was extremely polite and tried to be as helpful as possible.

My account is now a Silver account. :'( I can have Xbl again at any point, as long as I buy a subscription card. So, what do to without Xbl?

Let's start the Cat Xbl charity organisation. I'm sure many of you have 48h Xbl trials lying about somewhere. If you feel you don't need them or just want to donate them to me, please, please do. I would love to have Xbl over christmas. :D

Thanks to all of you that have given me a trial and that helped me sorting the account out. I was really annoyed on that day, because I had to do a million things at the same time and the customer service was annoying me.

I really don't know at the moment. I've got a few trials to last me a bit, expecially as my internet still isn't fully sorted out and still under half a meg.

I have no money coming in though and although I've always said that 40 quid is not a lot of money, it definitely is for me now. :(
