Well, since you got it out of my sig I'm obviously for it :D
The only things along these lines I'm alright with are "wtf" and the like.

Yeah, you had it in your sig and I think this is a brilliant idea. We should really create this movement.
Txt speak is the thing that annoys me most on forums, it's not arguments or such, just people that can't be bothered to fully write their posts.
At the end of the day, the posts show how people are and I just find it really difficult having a discussion with someone that obviously doesn't bother.

Yeah, it's like they cba to type it out so why are they bothering even posting?
It also strips them of all their character, so it's like you're just talking to "another txt-speaker."
So you hate text speak yet don't mind saying wtf or cba?
I still don't get what the huge deal is with text speak, are you all that daft you can't make out what they are saying? and considering 99% of them talk nonsense you don't even have to read there posts, so why bother?

Well, I find it really hard to read if someone is using text speak. Takes me double the time to read it.
And there is a difference to cba/wtf/ffs which are abbreviations for phrases and not just words that have half their letters missing.

Because text-speak means we have to read slower. Fast readers almost never look at every letter in the word individually, and we certainly never read things out pho-net-ic-a-lly. Once you've read enough, you actually only need the first and last letters to be correct, and the length of the word to be correct, and some approximation of the middle letters. Txt speak, is uncommon and unstandardized. It means we have to slow down, and it's annoying. So yes, of course we can "make out" what they're saying, most of the time. But we shouldn't have to "make out" if we're all supposedly using the same language. At this point, WTF and CBA are like ATM- common enough acronyms that they're quickly scannable by the eye.
You want to "ban" text speak because it takes an extra minute to read, that is just being too god damn lazy, as I said 99% of their posts are nonsense so you don't have to read them.
What next, banning crazy words only a handful of people know? because THAT is more difficult to understand than text speak.
If you want to ban text speak you need to use BASIC ENGLISH because I don't expect everyone knows what some words on this forum mean. Why though? I mena using "advanced" English is common nature to some, yet isn't text speak?
People should be able to use whatever "English" they want, taking the when we are being told how to type on a forum these days :p

Well, not all of them have nothing to say and you got to read their replies in a thread, as otherwise you don't read the whole thread and can't reply.
Text speak is no common nature, infact it's only been adapted over the last few years, whereas English, the way you and I are using it has been around a lot longer.
The reason most people use text speak is because they are too lazy to type out full words, so why should we spend extra time trying to decipher them?
Also, text speak is not used at schools/in exams/on the job. Some kids can't even write properly any more, because they are so used to txt speak. It's in everyones best interest if txt speak is banned from everywhere apart from text messages.

It's not laziness. Laziness would be your suggestion of just skipping the posts. This shame-the-texters campaign texts more effort than doing nothing, so no, it's not laziness. And your slippery slope line of thinking is, quite frankly, bull. If you're the vocal minority as opposed to the complacent majority, you get to be the one who can draw the line against your slippery slope. Also, of course that isn't "what's next". "Advanced" english isn't in the same category as text speak. One encourages someone to be more articulate, the other one less articulate. Clearly the former is better.

Spamming. Spam stands for Stupid Pointless Annoying Messages. This means don't just post one word or otherwise useless replies. Text speak is also generally not allowed. Text Speak was created for mobile phones that have a character limit, these forums do not have a character limit in your post, so please do not post messages containing Text Speak that can be hard to read.
:) Its already a part of the forum rules but its the one rule which a lot of people ignore. Yes I would say we are all accustomed to using the odd imo, 4tw, etc in our posts but they are abbreviations of words more than text speak itself. I'd love it for people to write words out in full as text speak can often lead to confusion (Y).

I hate text talk! I dont even text, nor know how to really on a phone anymore! What is the point of having a mobile phone to text (please people dont reply as i know)...it's to talk on, or is it just me as i am old now and when i had my first mobile there was no text or nothing on it. Infact it spent more time being charged up than used.
I dont like it and it isnt right...fair enough, i may use shortend words sometime on here but that's it. To be honest, i dont even though what half the buggers mean!

I got sent a PM about my Spelling on this site and it wasn't a positive one :'(
I like where you are coming from but I don't tend to witness much Text Speak on here as I think most people get the message so to speak.
I don't even use Text Speak when sending a Text Message so I'm certainly not going to post it on here or anywhere else but nice to see some support for proper use of the English Language....Coming from a German aswell :s
