Anyone got any idea what the MS update does on this game?

I played it yesterday and today without updating it and loved it. I have updated it tonight and I am sure that textures take longer to appear and occasionally shake and disappear. Am I being paranoid or has anyone else noticed this?

Definitely play it on Hardcore, it isn't that hard..just enough to give you a few minor problems but I haven't hit the difficulty spike people keep referring to...supposed to be about halfway through the game.

Amazing game, got it yesterday from gameplay and played it almost all day yesterday.

Co-op is great, started some of it yesterday. Multiplayer is great fun and lag free from what I have seen so far

cool feature, whenever your stuck in the single player, you can go co-op wherever your at in the game and hopefully get some good help. Not to mention the live kicks arse.

However, I have one final hope. I just phoned MS there, and I've just discovered that the 2 red lights syndrome is different from the 3 red lights one, and that my console isn't actually broken, just overheating.

The thing is, though, it's in a very well-ventilated space, in a room which isn't usually too warm. So I'm going to go out just now and buy one of those cooler thingys. If that doesn't improve it, though, then they said I'll just have to send them the console back, as one of the fans may have broken inside. :(

I suggest just getting a usb fan for the back rather than an Intercooler.

I've read it elsewhere that as the Intercooler is not an official product that should a 360 be returned to MS and they find evidence that one has been used (marking on the case & power port) that they'll void your warranty and return the 360 to you untouched.

Just bought the game a few hours ago for £35 which is amazing, so is the game mind you, I was worried about the gameplay yet it's about as perfect as any game can get, the graphics are stunning even on a cheap SD TV and the game is quite challenging on easy.

Only thing I didn't like so far was this mission where I use the hammer weapon, but I put it back to get my proper gun back, turns out I needed the hammer again yet the door was locked so I couldn't get it, pretty gay.

Anyway the game is amazing, easily a 9/10 for me, now I hope MP is as good if not better.

Btw if you are crap at the game like me do you want to do some co-op? anyone will do, just send a pm here :)

I'll do some Co-op after completing Hardcore on SP...be warned that it'll be Insane difficulty though.

Meh, I think I've found out the problem, anyway. My HDTV. I went back to the old PC monitor I was using for the last 10 months, and no problems in a whole game of Madden, when usually it switches itself off after the kickoff.

Maybe heats up the Xbox too much or something?

Thing is, I was playing Gears on it, and then tried it on the PC monitor. And it's just incredible how much better HDTV is.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Gonna try my HDTV with some of the cables out, so that whilst it might not look as amazingly sharp, it'll still be on a big-ass screen. :D

Man, this game rules. Halfway through Act 2 now, and looking to have at least got up to the end of Act 3 by the time I'm done tonight, provided I have no problems with overheating.

well youd think so but trust me if you did that ON YOUR OWN you know 'go left and you go right' and faced say me and my two team mates Panda and Pigeon we would end up flanking you

one of us would keep you busy by constantly shooting another will be slightly off to the side doing the same thing which will pin you to whiever wall/vehicle/furniture you are using for cover and in the meantime the third guy comes up from behind and sticks you with a Frag...

that kind off thing requires communication which in turn means your tactically planning an assault, may sound un gaming but its what you are doing

and hence why im not fond of ranked because i believe you cant go in with your mates so youll always be stuck with 3 mutes and lose the game as you will end up ebign lone wolfs trying to be a glory boy...

Staying as 4 is all but suicide if you're playing decent people....I saw a guy get 4 grenade kills in a matter of seconds, using 2 grenades cos the team bunched up.

2 sets of 2 is much safer, or an attacking squad of 2 with 1 holding back giving sniper support and 1 stealth ninja guy to sneak around.

You can play Ranked with mates providing you stay at similar ranks...you just have have to search the custom rooms for them....once your ranks are a set amount apart though you have no chance.

i cant beleive people are playing it on casual, me and alkalie got pretty much through act 1 without dying much on hardcore, so id go for that. I dont like games that are too easy, like CoD3 on easy (you can finish levels with just melee, that should not be possible)

I mainly only die because I don't know what I'm doing, when I finish the SP on casual I will do hardcore, it just means on hardcore I will know what to do and where to go :)

Yea the person who is player 2 doesnt keep the saved progress but player 1 does, so if you want to continue from where u left off you have to do it with the same player 1.

Yeah, this game really rocks. I can't wait to get online with it.

But yeah, that bit where you have to drive the Junker is a load of crap. It tells you to stop and turret the Kryll every few seconds, but you can actually complete it much more easily if you just drive non-stop from start to finish. I did that and still had about half the life remaining. Bit stupid, that. :unsure:

The level with the bats WHAT THE HELL!

You shoot the gas canister for the light to keep them away yet they STILL kill me when I am standing right next to it, after dying a dozen times I got to the bit where it's all dark and I have to turn a light around, but omg.

I didn't even budge out of the tunnel before they killed me, then I had to start from the start again hahahaha, unbelievable.

What the hell do I do here? it's like you go 2 inches away from light and die, very, VERY annoying.

Haha, yeah, I really enjoyed that first time.

I got it to flatten one of the doorways totally by accident, which was cool. Just happened to be standing there randomly when it charged me. :D


And Kalou, the propane tank thing is easy if you just check everywhere for them. If you have all of them in the nearby area lit, you won't die.


I just finished Act 3 this morning. They tried to make it really scary, but they just haven't pulled it off like something like Resi or Silent Hill would. Far too predictable.

Grenade tags are way too overpowered and I feel they ruin the game somewhat...I can pull them off no probs and rack up some kills but they fell cheap. You can run full pelt and commando roll up to an enemy, giving them virtually no chance to kill you, and you can tag them from a short distance away....at least with the chainsaw you have to walk up and rev it before slicing.

I have read plenty on what people think of individual levels and aspects of the game but not the game itself.

I have to say I really believe this has to be the best complete game ever on any console to date.

This is perhaps not a game that is a whole new world..after all its essentially a shooter..plenty of them about. It wont win any awards for a ground breaking game. However it could easily win an award for the game that defined a genre. Every FPS now should use GOW as its marker.

GTA 3 was a ground breaking game for its genre, GOW is not. The original Fifa games were groundbreaking games for its genre, GOW is not. You get my drift...but as games go..full stop. This has to be the best ever !

You really feel the solidity of this game, I found a couple of glitches but they did not take away from the feel of the game. It was totally solid. Every footfall, every shot, every bit of combat, every shoulder charging dive for cover feels heavy and genuine you feel as if you are a part of the game itself. The menus are easy on the eye. The scenery is spectacular, look at the water and then 'Just cause' hang your head in shame ! This is what next generation gaming is all about.

The cut scenes are spectacular and feels like your at the movies anyway. Even the button choices are simple, easy to remember and allow you to really get going in this game.

The single player aspect is amazing,, I cant comment on online play yet as I have not tried it, but I bet its damn good.

However what I can comment on is..co-op play...invite a friend into your single player game...my mate did...and boy oh boy oh boy..amazing..its seemless. Totally inspiring and EVERY game should have this option of co-op play. Really, If you have not tried it, you wont be dissapointed at all.

An incredible game defining its genre. Its got to be the marker for future gaming.

It's pretty linear, and there isn't a great deal of problem solving to do, which means that it's more a case of repeatedly trying where you failed, rather than having to work anything out.

I still like it a lot, but there are a lot of games I can think of which are a fair bit more intuitive.

Totall aggree with you crumplefish..but I have to point out what I said in my first post..or rather extend on it some more...

I am not for a minute saying that every singular aspect of the game is perfection..as you pointed out its quite linear. Likewise anyone who loves Oblivion for its genre is not going to get much out of GOW, anyone who prefers racing on PGR is not going to get much out of GOW..I know thats simplified maybe too much, but you get the idea. Likewise with your comment, you have to say, yes its linear, and if you prefer games that are not linear, then GOW wont rock your boat as much...its all about individual preference.

What I am trying to say is that Overall, as a complete games...for gamings sake..its sets the standard of how a game should work. Not looking at the gaming genre itself..just how a game plays, works etc..it has to be one of the best ever, if not the best. In terms of realism and gameplay itself.

As one example, GTA 3 arguably was the best game of its day for its genre, but looking back, there are so many things for realism that could have been better, the characters were quite blocky compared to todays characters, even for its time the characters were blocky, it did not feel solid in its gameplay..it was an awesome game...but individual aspects could have been better....wheras GOW...as a game...has it all..and not many games can say that.

As a seperate point alltogether can you imagine playing GTA with realistic graphics like that of GOW ! Ok that is probably against the grain of what GTA is trying to acheieve, but can you imagine ??

Anyway back to my point...that was what I was getting at..take away the genre and individual aspects...and look at overall quality and the game itself...no other game is as complete as GOW..thats my point...

But dont get me wrong..your point is also correct, its just not what I meant. Hopefully the above explains slightly more

For me, the best games of all time have to be ones that define a genre. Doom, Mario 64, Goldeneye and alone in the dark spring to mind. Gears of War does this for me, as no game is like it.

It plays different and controls different to any combat game ive played and i like it. Its an awesome game with amazing graphics, which we will some come to think of as pish, just as doom looks now. But hey, it'll be fun until the next big thing comes out, i cant wait. GoW2 is a certainty. I just hope the brilliance of GoW doesnt overshadow Halo3, which may not bring much new to its genre than nice graphics.

I have done it on co op and single player and its different. You just have to take it very slow so the planks fall down before you step on them with 2 feet

The safe path is on the right, so just head right as soon as you get into the room.

Then you should just go in a sort of zig-zag pattern as I'll try to show here:

doesnt work on insane at all. you have to stop, shoot the crill and carry on.

As for General RAAM, we put one on the turret, and only shoot him when ther crill arent round him.

There's a problem there, in that I can't actually get to the turret without being Kryll'd.

Bear in mind that this is me doing single-player, so I don't have someone else to make it slightly easier. Dom is absolutely useless.

There's a problem there, in that I can't actually get to the turret without being Kryll'd.

Bear in mind that this is me doing single-player, so I don't have someone else to make it slightly easier. Dom is absolutely useless.

Right, I beat the bugger. Excellent.

I just kept unloading the Lancer in his direction, even when he had the Kryll shield, because some bullets get through. Took me down from 660 to about 150 before he reached me, and that's a whole lot of bullets in your face, shield or not.

Then when he finally reached me, I stunned him with a grenade, sprinted up to the turret, and wasted him. Yaaas.

Bought GoW yesterday. Played it for a couple of hours on single player and thought it was great.
Played it split screen co-op with a mate today, game gets even better.

I played it for a few hours, but just got bored of the repetetivness of it all. Tried to play online, but after twenty attempts to connect, but losing the host I gave up.

my favourites are the ones that smack talk for the first round or two coz they're winning then go all quiet when you bring it back level and take the lead, then leave when they are 3-4 rounds down. Happened earlier, hilarious. In the first round one was so cocky to down Alkalie, let him get back up, down him again, let him get back up and then run away. Alkalie then finished off both member left on their team. Was sooo funny.

This game is so hard it's funny, I played it with an American for like 3-4 hours yesterday on hardcore and we got to act 3 I think, it was SOLID, then my game lagged like hell, I couldn't move so I left.

I do hate the save system though, now the 4 hours we played together will be wasted when he plays it with someone else, why can't you have multiple saves? aka I could have 4 different co-op games going on at the same time, yet on this game you can only have ONE for both SP AND MP, it's terrible, Dead Rising take two.

The game is good in SP but playing SP with someone over co-op is just amazing, time flies past and you could sit all day doing the missions, I could barely move my erse and got an amazing 3 hour sleep but I don't care.

There is a trick to get it working online, you have to press X again when it says refreshing, then you get a list of games behind the refreshing text and you join one of them, I tried doing it the "normal" way yesterday and after around 12 attempts none worked, I done this technique once and it worked first time, very good job by the developers :p

we got stuck on act four on insane yesterday for a bit in a building, as for defeating general raam on your own, shoot him with torqu bow so his kryll come off him then unload the lancer rifle in his face, wen he egets close bog off down to the other end and wast him with your rifle agen.

insane is the most fun thing you will ever do aswell as frustrating, so get a prtner and do it on insane!!!

Two issues with this game:

1. Saving System: Just one save for MP and SP campaign, that's really uncomfortable; yesterday I let some of my friends begin a new campaign, and my last checkpoint was gone. That's something Epic would have done with no effort.

2. Just 2 Players on one console: This is really what keeps this game from being a classic. When you have a console that supports up to 4 players, you have to exploit it - Halo2, just for this feature, is still a little better on Multiplayer.

Apart from these lacks, Gears of War is easily the best shooter ever made, and though the SP campaign is fairly short, the MP part is just stunning.

Nope, that gamertag has expired a while ago. I made my achievements with a new GT named SOULFIRE WRATH. Anyway, you're right, I still didn't finish the game, but I read on the reviews that the campaign is a little short.

too right, anyone who says the game is short aint played it on insane yet. As we know from old arcade games, the hardest setting is the one the game is meant to be played on. They wouldnt have made the AI so clever for casual mode. They keep trying to outflank us, storm us with groups etc... Its amazingly good. We just got up to the mansion on insane.

Single Player on this game doesnt live up to the hype. Graphics look really nice but the cover system needs more work done. Your running past stuff... oh wait my guy just wants to cover by this rock for no reason... cheers now I am being shot in the side.

BTW people. PS3 will get this game. It will just be called Unreal Tournament 2007 and will be a FPS. A game which the 360 isn't going to get.

Alkalie and I finished the game on insane difficulty, getting all the cog tags!

General RAAM was a on insane but alkalie finished him off with a nice bit of blind fire.
For me, act 3 and 4 were harder than act 5

yup, we went through on hardcore and found about 20 on our own, i got a guide to find the rest as we went through on insane. We still had to go back and get the one at the end of the beserker on act 1 in the outside bit.

never had a problem. Me and Alkalie played co-op all the way through hardcore and insane with no connection issue.

he'll raise some of his legs, shoot him in the stomach, when he screams, shoot him in the neck/head. keep doing that and then it'll tell you to shoot some latches and he'll fall to his doom

Yeah, again I found out this by accident. I was just blindly shooting at him, and noticed that when I caught him right on the neck, he jumped backwards. Then I saw the latches a bit further back. 2 plus 2.

Just got the game yesterday. Too busy with thesis to finish it but so far I've finished the first 2 acts on hardcore. Goddamn best game I have on the 360 by FAR. Easily my favourite FPS (although a bit of space will always be set aside for Dues Ex - mainly because its not really an FPS as much as it is a RPG so you can't really compare it). OMG, so good, so good. I tried 1 game of multiplayer and got thrashed horribly. I made 1 kill though, hurray for me. I was like the only person in my team to score so maybe it wasn't as much that I sucked as my entire team including me sucked. Ahwell... plenty of time for practice with the holidays coming up :)

You know about the Shoryuken finishing move right?

If facing right you press, right, down, down-right and melee. If facing left then reverse it, if facing up 90 degree it and if facing down 180 it.

Someone did tell me you need 7 COG Tags to be able to use the move..dunno if that's true or not.

Some guy did it and came back and then did it like another 3 times.

Just completed GoW on Hardcore and have worked all the way through Insane on co-op and we are trying to defeat the General Raam. Has anyone got any hints, we have tried almost everything, frags, sniper etc but to no avail.

the general way to do it is for one guy, you, to shoot him with the bow, the krill fly off, then the other guy snipes him in the head, and you switch to the machine gun and put bullets into him. when the krill get back on him, repeat.

i think the game may be too hard on insane to NOT play co-op. On single player Dom wont revive you, its game over.

Online is just too much fun, the game hasnt been out of my 360 since it game out, and im in no way getting bored, im just getting better. I love when people complain my gun is more powerful than theirs, and then i tell them that i always keep it with active reload (more powerful) bullets in the chamber

Liam needs help on a couple of GOW things...
First, how the hell to you kill RAAM, I mean I can get his sheild down but the only weapons I have are sniper rifle thing, a pistol and a torque bow with no ammo in it, I get owned alot. Speaking of getting owned brings me to my second point, online. Get my ass kicked avery time, any suggestions?

About RAAM... pick up the Lancer before you go in if you're playing on Casual, because when the Kryll fly away, if you pound him with that, he can be dispatched very easily.

If you're on Hardcore, you're better off going for headshots with the sniper rifle when the Kryll are off.

Ideally you'd have torque bows, but if you don't then you're going to have to follow one of the above.

I found the best way to kill raam is fire the torque bow at him then the kryll fly off then switch to the sniper and get as many head shots off with fast reloads as you can then do it again until hes dead(Y) It takes 8 head shots on casual:D :D :D Oh and if you dont have the torque bow then its best to go back to the first part of the train and do it again ;)

HAHA, why didnt I think to restart the level:( Anywho just did it on casual(Big whoop) Now I need to do the other two difficulty levels. BTW is there going to be a second one, the last movie kinda hinted at it.

Play it on Hardcore, should last you more than two days.

dunno, i did it on the bit when the fireman guy falls through the floor, drop down and stick one of the lampent wretches, rinse and repeat

Play it on insane and you wont find it so easy. You need 2 really good players to complete it in any sort of a quick time.

I myself prefer Raven Down as it is quite small and you are never far from the action. I don't mind Old Bones but it is too big if you are playing 2 vs 2.
